Reveal 'Matter-of-Fact Courage'
of Ghetto Fighters at Memorial

Nearly 700 people attending
the commemorative program in
observance of the 15th anniver-
sary of the Warsaw Ghetto up-
rising sat entranced as tale up-
on tale of heroism was reviewed
by Feigele Peltel, one of the
few survivors.
Although she might have told
of her personal courage, Miss
Peltel, who was better known
during the Ghetto conflict as
"Vladke," preferred to speak
of the many deeds that were
performed in the face of certain
death.
She said that heroism in those
days was not extraordinary, but
was a matter-of-fact, day-to-day
matter—that the courage dis-
played by the Ghetto martyrs
was taken for granted.
By way of illustration, she
mentioned the calm of one
mother who, with her little boy,
was taken on the last march to
death. They were forced to dig
a pit and then they were to be
shot.
While they were digging, the
mother said to her son that as
the Germans fired she would
fling herself before the boy and
fall on top of him. She told him
not to move—to play dead for a
long time. Then, perhaps he
could find his way to safety.
Vladke, herself, helped to
smuggle arms into the Ghetto,
and at the same time, took out
with her children to be placed

with Polish families for safe-
keeping.
She is the author of a book
"Fun Beyde Zayten Geto-Moy-
er" (On Both Sides of the
Ghetto Wall), which explains
Jewish life in Warsaw and un-
derground activities from 1942
through the Ghetto uprising to
the liberation in 1945.
Rabbi Jacob E. Segal, of Adas
Shalom Synagogue, the major
English speaker, pointed out
that the people of the Ghetto
had not really died.
They live, he said, in the
6,000,000 trees that provide the
beautiful green countryside of
Israel—in the Forest of Mar-
tyrs; they live in monuments in
communities where once the
Ghettos of Europe had been;
they live in the survivors who
have been rescued and saved
for a new life in Israel. "
Cantor Hyman J. Adler, of
Cong. Bnai David, chanted sev-
eral liturgical selections for the
occasion, and a pageant, "Eter-
nally Our People," was pre-
sented by the Yiddish Folk
Chorus of the Workmen's Cir-
cle, under the direction of Mir-
iam Gornbein.
The program, under the
chairmanship of Samuel Sigal,
principal of the Mittelshul, was
one of the most dignified pro-
grams presented in the history
of the observance.

OSHER, PAREVE,

Ail-purpose Margarine!

Dr. Norman Drachler, educa-
tional director of the Temple
Beth El religious school, has
prepared a veritable Zionist and
Israeli history in the resource
material he has compiled on the
occasion of Israel's tenth anni-
versary. It is
contained in a
42-page mime-
ographed book
that is being
used in the
Beth El school
This collec-
tion includes
not only his-
t oric a ldata
and documents
Dr. Drachler but also bibli-
ographies for teachers as well
as for the children, audio-visual
aids listing records and film-
strips and a group of Hebrew
and Israeli songs.
Appended to the book are
two maps, of Israel and the
entire area embracing Israel
and the Arab League states.
Dr. Drachler's explanatory
notes on the aims of this collec-
tion of Zionist and Israeli his-
torical material is followed by
suggestions for activities by
children on questions involving
Israel's development.
Then comes a section on
hopes and prayers for Israel's
upbuilding, incorporating a sec-
tion from the Union Prayer
Book, quotations from the Bible
and from eminent Jewish lead-
ers.
The Jewish News Commen-
tator's collection of data on the
length of Jewish rule in Pales-
tine is included at this point.
Then comes a glossary of
Hebrew terms and facts on
the following: Zionist Con-
gresses, the Balfour Declara-
tion, the UN Partition Reso-
lution, Israeli geographical
facts, population and other
figures, and other statistics.
Documents incorporated here
are the Bilu Manifesto, the Con-
gressional Resolution in support
of a Jewish National Home, the
Proclamation of the State of
Israel and the signatories to it.
A chronological table of the
Zionist movement is especially
valuable. Then there is a record
of the life of the first President
of Israel, Dr. Chaim Weizmann,
articles on the Jewish National
Fund, Achad-Ha-Am,, the pres-
ent President of Israel, Itzhak
Ben-Zvi, Aharon David Gordon,
Baron de Rothschild and other
features.
The issuance of this pamphlet
is a creditable work, and Dr.
Drachler and Temple Beth El
deserve commendations for pro-
ducing it.
