Guests for Sabbath Custom Traced as Old Tradition

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright, 1958, JTA, Inc.)

The basis for the Jewish tra•
dition of having a guest at the
table for the Sabbath meal is
quite an old one. The Talmud
mentions a special dispensation
from tithing for one who has a
priest or a poor man as his cus-
tomary guest for Sabbath. (De-
mai 4:4). It is known that in
certain Western European com-
munities the heads of congrega-
tions would press the wealthy
members of the synagogue ' to

the 1958 Allied Jewish Campaign. From left are: Dr. Fram,

JERUSALEM — An ailing
member of the Moscow Cham-
ber of Commerce Arbitration
Tribunal whose illness has sev-
erals times held up Israel's
suit for more than $2,000,000
in damages resulting from
Soviet breaching of an oil for
citrus pact has resigned be-
cause of ill health, it was
learned here Tuesday.
Since Judge M. Ramzaytsev
was chosen by Israel from an
available panel, Israel will now
have to make another selec-
tion. It is hoped here that
this aspect of the case will be
gotten through with shortly
and the hearings resumed.
Israel's case is based on the
fact that the Soviet oil export-
ing trust abrogated its contract
after the Sinai operation on the
grounds that the USSR govern-
ment had ordered it to stop.
Israel holds that the company
and the government are in fact
one and therefore responsible
for damages.

Anniversary of Nazi
Anti-Semitism V Marked
By German Jewry

LONDON (JTA)—The Coun-
cil of Jews from Germany
marked the 25th anniversary of
the initiation of the Nazi cam-
paign against the German Jews
with the issuance of a state-
ment calling on German and
world public opinion to recall
the Nazi crimes and take care
that they may never be al-
lowed to recur.'
Noting that on April 1, 1933,
the National Socialist regime
"gave the signal for the vio-
lent exclusion of the Jews
from the German body politic,"
the Council pointed out that in
many quarters German com-
pensation to the victims of
Nazism is regarded as an arith-
metical problem rather than a
moral obligation.
It also pointed to the fact
that there is also a desire
among some people to forget
the Nazi crimes against the
Jews.

Remember Jewish Refugee
Officifil Warns

GENEVA, (JTA) — A lead-
ing Protestant church official
has issued a warning against
ignoring the fact that the
Middle East refugee problem
includes Jews as well as Arabs.
Dr. Elfan Rees, representa-
tive of the Commission of
Churches on International Af-
fairs and advisor on Refugee
Affairs to the World Council
of Churches, asserted in a 254-
page booklet, "Century of the
Homeless Man," that it was
"necessary to remembed that
concurrently with the, perpetu-
ation of the Arab refugee prob-
lem, more than 400,000 Jews
were forced to leave their
homes in Iraq, Yemen and
North Africa.

Roosevelt. There is proof of it
in "The Theodore Roosevelt
Treasury: A Self-Portrait from
— His Writings,"
edited by Her-
mann Hage-
dorn and pub-
lished by G. P.
Putnam's Sons
(210 Madison,
New York).
In one of his
letters, he
wrote: "Fear
God; and take
T. R. your own part!
Fear God, in the true sense of
the word, means love God, re-
spect God, honor God; and all
of this can only be done by
loving our neighbor, treating
him justly and mercifully, and
in all ways endeavoring to pro-
tect him from injustice and
cruelty ... "
In a letter to Owen Wister,
his Harvard classmate and later
his biographer, in 1901, he de-
cried stories that were circu-
lated in a medieval spirit, one
of them "of having Jacob Schiff
tortured in the Tombs until he
handed over a couple of million
dollars."
The situation was different
with respect to Russia in TR's
days. He was inclined to be
friendly to the Russian govern-
ment and people.
There are numerous expres-
sions for strong Americanism
and in opposition to hyphenated
Americans in his many letters
which are incorporated in this
interesting book.

Israel Adopts Budget
of 1,200,000 Pounds

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
Israel Parliament approved a
record budget of 1,197,900,000
Israeli pounds for the fiscal
year of 1958 which began April
1. The deputies promptly re-
cessed for the Passover holi-
day, which extends until May
19.
Herut, General Zionists and
Communists voted against the
budget, while Agudah and La-
bor Agudah Parties abstained
During the 22 days of debate
in the House the .budget was
increased by 35,000 pounds.

Chicago's Mayor Honored
with Israel, Eire Forests

CHICAGO, (JTA) — The
Jewish National Fund of Chi-
cago has purchased land in
Israel and will plant a forest
on it in honor of Chicago
Mayor Richard J. Daley, it was
announced at a JNF dinner
here.
Not to be outdone, former
Dublin Mayor Robert Briscoe,
a speaker at the dinner, an-
nounced he would purchase an
acre of land in County Lime-
rack, Eire, where Mayor
Daley's ancestors lived, and
would plant f a

take home a guest for the Sab-
bath from among the travelers
or the poor who were in the
synagogue on Friday night and
had nowhere to spend the Sab-
bath.
Rabbi Jacob E in d . e n used
some strong language about the
wealthy who refused to do so.
He told them that if a Holy
Scroll had fallen to the ground
there would be fasting and cry-
ing in the synagogue. The same
should be done if a poor trav-
eler were left without hospital-
ity for the Sabbath, he said.

Revised Edition of Mrs. Bellin's Cook Book

A revised and enlarged edi-
tion of the "Jewish Cook Book"
by Mildred Grosberg Bellin has
just been issued by Bloch Pub-
lishing Co.
This informative volume, a
guide to "international cook-
ing according to the dietary
laws," will no doubt continue
to hold a place of first im-
portance among the cook books
written by an authority.
"Aunt Babette Cook Book"
was the first Jewish cook book
published in English. After
other revisions, it was rewrit-
ten by Mrs. Bellin, a dieti-
cian of note, and her new and
revised edition carries on an
interesting precedent she had
set with her cooking sugges-
tions that follow kashrut regu-
lations.
Her new edition includes
many new recipes, has many
features—a 10-year calendar of
Jewish holidays, an explana-
tory chapter on the dietary
laws, holiday food laws and
customs, and other varied and
helpful information for the
Jewish housewife.
In the 450 pages of text in
this good book there not only
are hundreds of recipes — for
every day, the Sabbath and all
holidays—but also special sec-

tions with suggestions for ap-
petizers and canapes, soups,
sandwiches, pancakes and frit-
ters, salads, leftovers, cereals,
cakes and cookies, canning, jel-
lies, freezing, etc., etc.
There is a special section
for Passover that may prove
the best available on the sub-
ject.

It is evident that the custom
of taking a guest for the Sab-
bath was Judaism's concern for
the stranger and the needy. It
was particularly of concern on
the Sabbath since an observant
Jew, not being able to collect
alms on the Sabbath, was help-
less if not offered the hospital-
ity of a home.
