Dr. Glueck Reports
New Biblical Finds
in Israel's Negev

----

NEW YORK, (JTA) Dr. Nel-
son Glueck, Biblical archaeolo-
gist and president of Hebrew
Union College-JewiSh Institute
of Religion, who has just re-
turned from new archaeological
explorations of Israel's Negev
region, announced that he had
made important discoveries.
Two Judaean fortresses found
overlooking the Valley of Ru-
heiba confirm the findings of
Lawrence of Arabia identifying
Ruheiba with the Biblical site
of Rehovot (Genesis 26:22-23),
Dr. Glueck said at a press con-
ference.
The fortresses form an im-
portant part of a body of evi-
dence showing that Judaean
kingdom caravans followed the
famous Way of Shur to and
through Siani to Egypt.
At Qetsiot, site of a modern
Israeli settlement, Dr. Glueck
discovered immense evidence of
water engineering by the Naba-
taeans which, he said, if utilized
and duplicated by Israel today
could be of material assistance
in transforming the desert.

Index Dead Sea Scrolls
By Electronic Computer

NEW YORK, (JTA)—Inter-
pretation of the Dead Sea
Scrolls was moved up a notch
with the announcement • that a
complete index of the major
portion of the ancient manu-
script has been indexed with
the aid of an IBM electronic
computer.
Since the 2,000 year old doc-
ument has deteriorated and
many words are left only in
part, with phrases, sentences
and larger portions missing,
the nearly 30,000 words found
in the parchment were in-
dexed by use of the computer.
With these references ready,
scholars will be able to check
the use of fragments, words
or portions of words against
every possible interpretation.

Find 5,000-Year-Old
Cemetery in Israel

Recent discovery of a 5,000
year-old cemetery, situated at
Yazur, near Tel Aviv, was re-
ported by Jean Perrot, member
of a French archaeological mis-
sion in Israel who is now lec-
turing at New York University.
The cemetery belonged to a
group of people known as the
Anatolians, believed to have
come from Palestine by way
of Trans-Jordan.
Uncovered by a bulldozer
which was involved in a road
building operation, the ceme-
tery is located miles from the
dwelling place of the Anato-
lians, near Beersheba.
