Israel's tenth anniversary was
acclaimed here last Friday and
Monday evenings, at musical
functions that were directed by
the leading Israeli composer
Marc Lavry.
Invited here for the first of
many Israel anniversary events
planned for the coming two
months, Lavry directed "The
Sacred Service," his widely-
acclaimed composition, at the
Sabbath Eve service of Temple
Beth El, and was guest con-
ductor at the concert, which
featured his compositions, Mon-
day evening, at the Labor Zion-
ist Institute.
Both events turned out to be
enthusiastic community gather-
ings. Nearly 1,500 people, rep-
resenting all factions in the
community, were at the Temple
Beth El service. A capacity
audience attended the concert.

Dr. Richard C. Hertz, senior
rabbi of Temple Beth El, of-
fered interesting explanations
of "The Sacred Service" after
the "L'cho Dodi."
Calling the dedication of
last Friday's service to Jew-
ish Music Month "a rare ex-
perience of great spiritual
texture," Rabbi Hertz utilized
the occasion to pay respect to
Israel's anniversary.
Speaking of Lavry and his
compositions, he told of the
background of "The Sacred
Service," its first presentation
in San Francisco and its wide
acceptance by Reform congre-
gations. He called attention to
the prayers from the Union
Prayerbook, distributed in a
special pamphlet to the congre-
gation, which were used by
Lavry for his composition.
"This is a very historic
evening for Beth El," Dr.
Hertz said. "It is exciting!
Imagine a Reform service
composed by an Israeli—and
what a service!"
He added that Beth El honors
Marc Lavry by devoting an en-
tire service to his new work
after months of rehearsals. He
called the "L'cho Dodi" "a com-
position of great depth, neatly
worked out with antiphonal
singing." The entire service, he
said, represents "a blend of the
old and the new, an ancient
cantorial and a modern re-
sponse."
Jason H. Tickton, the direc-
tor of music of Temple Beth El,
was at the organ. The regular
choir — John H. Redfield, Ma-
rion Stannard, Helen Rowin,
Margit Kormendy and Cyril
Wezemael — participated in the
service. This choir was aug-
mented by Harriet Toomey,
Bella Goldberg, John Bryden,
Oscar Roman, James Murdoch
and Rebecca Frohrnan.
In addition to the impres-
sive direction by Marc Lavry
himself, the presentation of
his service was augmented by
the appearance of Emma
Schaver, popular Detroit so-
prano, who sang a Lavry
composition, the "Anthem
from 'Song of Songs.' " Mrs.
Schaver gave a perfect ex-
ample of a singer with long
experience who has poise,
who is master of her fine
voice and who, in the in-
stance of Jewish traditional
and Hebrew songs, shows un-
derstanding of the text and
therefore is able to give it
perfect and deeply moving in-
terpretation. That was the
case with her inspired and
inspiring solo Friday eve-
ning.

Monday Night's Concert
A capacity audience enthusi-
astically participated in the
Israel 10th anniversary concert
that featured Marc Lavry
throughout the entire evening
at the piano.
Lavry was soloist at the open-
ing of the program, in his
"Country Dances," and at the
first number following inter-
mission, in his very lively three
dances from his opera "Tamar."
Lavry was at the piano
throughout the program, serv-
ing as accompanist for all the
soloists and for the choir.
All the selections on the pro-
gram were Lavry compositions.
Irving Rosengard, baritone,
sang "Shir Ahava" and "At
Moledet."
Violinist Zinovi Bistritzki
played Lavry's "Slier," "Ye-
menite Dance" and "Hora."
The latter two showed an in-
teresting contrast. While the
Yethenite selection shows the
slowness and monotony of the
Oriental, the Hora is fast
moving. There is the differ-
ence in the tempers of East
and West in the two selec-
tions — one dragging the
other moving with rapidity.
Emma Scnaver was in ex-
cellent voice. She sang three
songs — "Boah Dodi," "She-
chora Ani" and "Kinneret,"
She was especially impressive
in "Kinneret" and she pleased
her audience with her rendition
of "Shechora Ani," the selection
from the Song of Songs which
she sang during the Temple
Beth El Friday night service.
Mrs. Schaver, who has ap-
peared with Lavry on num-
erous occasions in this coun-
try and in Israel, showed a
keen understanding of his
music, and she was an able
interpreter of it.
The Chamber Choir sang
"Sirati," "Emek" and "Degel
T'chelet Velavaan," Mrs. Schav-
er appearing with the choir in
the latter number.
Members of the Chamber
Choir included Ruth Bladen,
Rita Cohn, Frances Cooperman,
Goldie Eskin, Joseph Finkel-
stein, Ellis Freedenson, Mamie
Freeman, Elaine Gewirtz, Shi-
mon Gewirtz, Sylvia Heideman,
Leah Koven, Harold Landis,
Belle Pepper, Margaret Selby,
Ady Semel, Irene Stein and
Eugene Zweig.
The concert was co-spon-
sored by Detroit Friends of
Music, Farband-Labor Zionist
Organization, Music Study Club,
Sholem Aleichem Institute and
United Jewish Folk Schools.
As a salute to the State of
Israel on its 10th anniversary,
to which the concert was dedi-
cated, the program was pre-
ceded by greetings expressed by
Philip Slomovitz.
Rabbi MAURICE N. EISEN-
DRATH, president of the Union
of American Hebrew Congrega-
tions, will observe the Passover
holidays at the Liberal Jewish
congregation in Bombay, India.
