The Jaffa orange, grown ex-
clusively in Israel, is in such
international demand that in Is-
rael itself the oranges are ra-
tioned. Year by year, the indus-
try has been expanding, plant-
ing groves, mechanizing harvest-
ing and packing, but still the
supply does not meet the de-
mand.
Britain alone purchases over
one-third of Israel's orange pro-
duction. Last season Israel ex-

ported 8,000,000 boxes of this
fruit. It is recognized wherever
it is available as the finest or-
ange grown.
To meet this ever-growing de-
mand, Mehadrin Ltd., the larg-
est corporation in Israel de-
veloping new areas of citrus
cultivation and industry is cur-
rently engaged in a tremendous
expansion move.
On an economic mission to
the U. S. to raise capital for
this profitable industry is Judge
Baruch Giladi, an Israeli chief
judge presiding over 32 courts
in the Tel Aviv area. He has
been in Detroit for a month and
will be here several weeks long-
er, conferring with Detroit
leaders and investors in the
Mehadrin Ltd., and to seek new
investors for the growing in-
dustry.

Mehadrin and other heavy
investors and stockholders
are from Detroit, a city
heavily represented in all
major Israeli industries. Lo-
cal investors include Harold
Rosin, Sidney M. Shevitz, Irv-
ing I. Cohn, Sam Jacobs and
Harry Schumer.
Judge Giladi came to Israel
and
then.- Palestine from Russia
CURTAIN LAUNDRY in 1919 at the age of 2. He
studied in the American Uni-
versity located in Beirut, Leb-
anon, was graduated from law
school in Jerusalem, studied
further in London and was ad-
mitted to the bar there.
During World War II, he as-
sisted in the prosecution of war
criminals. He was named judge
in Palestine under the Brit-
ish mandate and was re-ap-
pointed after the formation of
and Fancy
the State of Israel. All judges
in Israel are appointed for life
by the president. They are se-
lected from candidates by a

ment. All decisions are rend-

sometimes by a panel of three
or five judges. There are no
court reporters and judges
must make their own records
in long-hand.

of rabbis have jurisdiction over
Jews in Israel concerning mat-
ters of marriage and divorce.
Because of the "ingathering
of the exiles," it is not uncom-
mon to have a trial begin in
Hebrew and before it is over
it will have taken testimony in
as many as six languages. Judge
Gidali relates a case tried
before him, in which the charge
was read in Hebrew, but the ac-
cused made it known that he
did not understand Hebrew,
just Syrian. Hearing this, a
spectator in the court avoided
an adjournment to find an in-
terpretor, by volunteering that
he too understood Persian.
With the trial once again un-
derway, the charge was re-read,
but the interpreted looked as
puzzled as the defendent. Yes,
the interpretor understood Per-
sian and Russian, but also no
Hebrew. After this was made
known, there was no problem
since another spectator knew
Hebrew and Russian. The
charge was read once again, was
translated into Russian and
thence into Persian and the
trial proceeded.
Speaking of his trip to the
U.S. on behalf of Mehadrin,
Judge Giladi explains that
though it may be hard for
Americans to understand why
a judge, or for that matter
a cabinet minister or presi-
dent should leave his post for
a time in order to go abroad
to promote Israeli industry,
it is because America is an
established country, while Is-
rael must build itself up to
make itself self-sustaining.
Because it has proved itself
so profitable, an ever-larger seg-
ment of Israel devotes itself
to the production of its incomp-
rable Jaffa orange. Attempts
have been made to cultivate
this delectable orange in this
country, but all such ventures
have failed.
The managing director of
Mehadrin is Mendes Sachs,
an American-born graduate of
Berkley University who set-
tled in Israel 26 years ago.
He is recognized as one of
the top citrus horticulturists
in the world. He is the neph-
ew of Detroiter Lawrence
W. Crohn.
While most European coun-
tries eat Jaffa oranges, they are
not available in the U.S. They
can be shipped to this country
quite rapidly, but at port they
must undergo a quarantine last-
ing several weeks, by which
time they lose their distinctive
flavor. Shipments are now be-
ing sent to Canada, however.
Jaffa oranges are so desirable
that at one time French
orange growers started calling
their domestic crops Jaffa
oranges.. The Israeli growers
protested to France (a heavy
importer of the Israeli oranges)
and when no results were ob-
tained, the threat was made
that if the practice continued,
Israeli brandy producers would
call their products "cognac," a
name very valuable to French
wine-growers. "Jaffa" oranges
are once again the exclusive
property of Israeli orange grow-
ers.
Judge Giladi is staying at the
Belcrest Hotel during his De-
troit visit. He is here with his
wife Nina, who first came to
Israel seven years ago as a
Swedish tourist and remained
as his wife, a son, Michael, 4
and a daughter Tamar, 17
months.

JOHANNESBURG, (JTA) —
South African Jewry will pre-
sent the core of a town in
Israel to the Israeli govern-
ment within the next six
months.
Ten years after laying out
the basic communal buildings,
parks and 900 homes, the
South African Jewish Appeal,
the Unions Zionist Federation
and the South African Jewish
Board of Deputies decided to
give the town of Askelon to
the Israel government as a
gift of South African Jewry.
In the flush of enthusiasm
following upon the proclama-

tion of the State of Israel, the
South African communal or-
ganizations organized a com-
pany to plan, finance and build
a "garden city" in Israel as a
demonstration project for fu-
ture urban development in the
Jewish State. "Afridar," as the
town planning and housing
company was called, drove
through with its plans even
though the final costs were
three times the original esti-
mates.
