Herzl Institute Issues
Two Pamphlets by Patai

The Theodor Herzl Institute,
250 W. 57th St., N.Y. 19, has
issued two pamphlets by Dr.
Raphael Patai - "Cultures in
,Conflict" and "Current Jewish
Social Research."
"Cultures in Conflict" con-
tains the texts of three lectures
on the socio-cultural problems
of Israel and her neighbors. In
his first lecture on the tradi-
tional Arab society, Dr. Patai
enlightens his audience regard-
ing the religion, familism and
aestheticism of Israel's neigh-
bors.
The conflicts that have arisen
as a result of the divergent ele-
ments in Israel and the clashes
and cultural changes are enu-
merated in the other two talks,
"Current Jewish Social Re-
search" is an endeavor to
gather up-to-date information on
the current activities of schol-
ars and researchers in a wide
range of Jewish subjects- in a
systematic manner.
A listing therefore of unpub-
lished disSertations and of stud-
ies which are extant in the li-
braries of higher learning has
long been a desideratum, par-
ticularly for all those interested
in all phases of Jewish learning.
Dr. Patai has gathered together
a list of 1118 items, of uneven
character, yet revealing the na-
ture of Jewish academic inter-
est, touching upon every phase
of Jewish learning.
The areas covered are anthro-
pology, apocrypha, Bible in all
its branches, bibliography, biog-
raphy, education, folklore, He-
brew language and Semites, ev-
ery • field of Jewish history,
homiletics, Israel and Palestine,
law, literature, Midrash and Ag-
gada, music, mysticism, philoso-
phy, press studies, psychology,
rabbinics, religion, science, so-
cial work, sociology. Talmud,
Zionism and nationalism.
