Allied Drive Workers Hear
Appeals for Urgent Action

Continued from Page 1
"During the last 10 years,"
the General said, "we more
than doubled our population
mostly with people from under-
developed countries. A genera-
tion behind in their standards,
unable to pass the simplest
tests, we had to train them and
hurl over many obstacles in
order to infuse them with skill
and spirit."
The high goals in training
these people are being attained,
he said. He spoke of the spirit
of the people in the Israeli
armed forces and said that the
citizens of the new land are
being fully integrated.
"We must get others out
from lands of oppression before
the curtain goes down," he
pleaded. "There is little time
left."
Stating that "a lot is happen-
ing in the Middle East through
reorganization in Arab states,"
he reminded the audience that
Israel is the only democracy in
that area. He said his country
must have the help of American
Jewry in carrying on its tasks
of freeing the oppressed and
declared that "Israel was set
up with faith in the enduring

partnership with world Jewry."
"A great opportunity has
been given our generation, such
as is given to few generations,
to leave their mark on civiliza-
tion," he said. "As we . have
proven worthy of it up to now,
I am sure we shall continue to
do so."
Announcing the approach to
the half-way mark, by raising
the initial sum of $2,800,000,
Sobeloff said that the large
audience that listened to Gen.
Tolkowsky and welcomed his
message from Israel sends one
back through him to the people
of Israel. "It is challenging to
us," he said, "to go forward. We

To Plant Israel
Grove in Memory
of S. Lieberman

In response to many requests,
a committee is being formed to
plant a grove of 1,000 trees in
memory of the late Samuel Lie-
berman --hose death is being
mourned by a great number of
friends, both among Jews and
non-Jews, in this community.
At a memorial meeting for
Lieberman held recently, sev-
eral prominent communal lead-
ers, including those of the Na-
tional Association for the Ad-
vancement of Colored People,
who eulogized him, expressed
the hope that soiree befitting and
deserving monument to the
memory of a "colorful and be-
loved servant of 'humanity and
of Israel like Sam Lieberman"
should be set up. As such, a
grove of trees in Israel was
recommended.
The committee to memorial-
ize Lieberman, through the Jew-
ish National Fund, is now in
formation.
Any individual, or any of the
many groups with which the
deceased was affiliated, may
plant trees at $2 each by call-
ing the Jewish National Fund,
U.N. 4-2767. Certificates attest-
ing to the planting of the trees,
with the name of the planters,
will be sent to the Lieberman
family.
