wJ Congress Executive Asks USSR Mark Beginning
of Professorship
to Return Religious and Cultural
Freedom to Its Jewish Citizens

AMSTERDAM — An urgent
appeal to the Soviet Union to
return to its Jewish citizens
their freedom of religious and
cultural institutions was voiced
here at a meeting of the Euro-
pean executive of the World
Jewish Congress. The delegates
from 11 countries on the Con-
tinent and North Africa ex-
pressed their concern over the
situation of the 3,000,000 Soviet
Jews. Among the delegates were
two from the recently affiliated
Jewish community of Commu-
nist Hungary.
The executive resolved un-
animously to send a WJC dele-
gation to Warsaw to participate
in the forthcoming 15th anni-
versary observances of the War-
saw Ghetto Uprising. An in-
vitation to attend had been for-
warded by the Cultural and
Social Association of Polish
Jews, the official Jewish or-
ganization of Poland.

out that representatives of the
Hungarian Jewish community
were present, emphasized that
this proved there was no under-
lying principle preventing the
Jews of other Eastern European
communities from similarly get-
ting together with Jews from
Western communities to discuss
specifically Jewish questions.
He stressed that the WJC did
not take sides in the East-West
power struggle.
Reports on the recent devel-
opments affecting the status of
Jews in Morocco and Tunisia
were presented. It was disclosed
that A. L. Easterman, political
director of the Congress, was
proceeding to Morocco to con-
tinue negotiations with mem-
bers of the government of Pre-
mier Si Bekkai on matters of
urgent concern to the Jews of
that country.
Congress leaders stressed that
the emerging Arab nationalism
in North Africa had presented
Jews there with new problems,
particularly in the economic
sphere. However, early appre-
hension about the safety of
Jews in Morocco and Tunisia
seemed unfounded and leaders
of the two countries have kept
their promises to observe the
principles of human rights laid
down in the UN Declaration on
that subject.
It was announced that the
world executive of the WJC
would meet in Geneva July
20 to 24.

JWB Plans Global
'Operation Passover'

From bleak U.S. radar bases
in the Arctic to the "Texas Tow-
ers" in the Atlantic—and from
missile units at Redstone, Ala.,
and Cape Canaveral, Fla., to
the down-range missile-tracking
stations in Puerto Rico—Jewish
servicemen will mark the Fes-
tival of Passover, as part of the
National Jewish Welfare
Board's global "Operation Pass-
over." Some 150,000 Jewish
military personnel and hospi-
talized veterans will observe
the Festival of Liberation,
which begins at sundown next
Friday.
A member of USO, JWB is
the government-authorized agen-
cy for serving the religious and
morale needs of Jewish service-
men. Through its Commission on
Jewish Chaplaincy, JWB recru-
its, endorses and serves Jewish
chaplains in the U.S. Armed
Forces.
Observances are being staged
by JWB for servicemen at U.S.
installations in Europe, Asia,
Africa and the Caribbean.
Present at the mass seder for
about 400 men in Ascom City,
Korea, will be Rabbi David
Max Eichhorn, director of field
operations of JWB's Commis-
sion on Jewish Chaplaincy,
whose pre-holiday, 30,000-mile
religious mission to Jewish
chaplains in the Far East will
wind up at seder services in
Seoul.
Going on similar missions for
seder services are _ Chaplain
Henry Arrow, to Thule, Green-
land; Chaplain Nathan Land-
man, of Andrews Air Force
Base, Washington, D.C., to Ice-
land; Chaplain Samuel Karff,
of Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.,
to Goose Air Force Base, Lab-
rador; and Chaplain Kenneth
Bromberg, of Sheppard Air
Force Base, Tex., to Pepperel
Air Force Base, Newfoundland.
Nearly 4,000 Passover food
boxes containing all the culinary
basic for the observance of the
holiday have been rolling for
months to the remotest overseas
areas.

Vienna to Pay Pensions to
Employes Who Fled Nazis
VIENNA (JTA)—The Vienna
municipal government decided
to honor all applications for full
pensions, regardless of when
received, from Jews who were
employes of the city until the
Nazis came to power and are
now living abroad.
This decision reverses an
earlier ruling which set a dead-
line, since passed, after which
pension applications would not
be accepted.
