Detroiters Send 37 Sifrei Torah to Israel Settlements

Following a visit by Rabbi
Eliezer Lavi, a representative
of the Israel Chief Rabbinate,
who outlined the need for Sifrei
Torahs in the hundreds of new
settlements in Israel, Detroit-
ers responded by gathering to-
gether 37 Holy Scrolls to send
to kinsmen in the Jewish state.
The drive was spearheaded
locally by Rabbi S. P. Wohlge-
lernter, Rabbi Joshua S. Sperka
and the office of the Mizrachi
Organization.
The campaign was organized
in response to an appeal by the
Israel Ministry of Religion
which asked American Jews to
provide Torahs for tens of thou-
sands of new immigrants, most
of them from Poland, whose
greatest need was the Sifrei
Toroh for minyanim in each
settlement.
Participating in the drive
were the following congrega-
tions:

Joseph Allen Memorial Syna-
gogue (Home for Aged), Beth
Shmuel, •Bnai David, Bnai Israel,
Detroit Hebrew Cong., Beth Tik-
vah, Beth Yehudah, Beth. Abraham,
Beth Tefilo Emmanuel, Mogen
Abraham, Bnai Moshe, Hebrew Be-
nevolent Society, Young Israel,
United Hebrew Schools, Shaarey
Zedek, Nusach Harie, Adas Sha-
lom and Beth Moses.

Rubin.
