Transfer of Scrolls to Bring
Recollections of 30 Y ears Ago

By the Oak-Woodser
There are some long-time
members of Cong. Bnai David
who remember, and even joined
in, ceremonies of 30 years ago
when the synagogue moved
into its new building at Elm-
hurst and 14th St.
It was just about this time
of the year that a procession
began from the congregation's
temporary place of worship at
Owens and John R and walked
all the way to the site of the
new synagogue, carrying their
Sifrei Torah in jubilation.
A few men will relive the
majesty of that scene next
Sunday, when Bnai David

When Northland Playhouse
opens its third summer season
early in June, the atmosphere
of the great outdoors will have
been sacrificed for the comfort
of the theater-goer.
Kenneth Schwartz, producer,
this week announced that in-
itial work has already started
for an entirely new indoor
theater, to be located at about
the same site as the previous
tent-playhouse.
Plans call for the rental of
the Geodesic dome used as a
special events building by
Northland Center as a covering
for a 1,000 seat auditorium and
the installation of heating and
air-conditioning systems.
The Playhouse last summer
was hit by a series of • setbacks,
when the tent was blown down
on three different occasions and
cold weather kept audiences
huddled in topcoats.
Although the season's pro-
gram has not yet been con-
firmed, theater parties are al-
ready being arranged. For in-
formation, contact the Play-
house office in the Northland
Center medical concourse, EL

escorted through the city to
the new building. Each Torah
will rest under a choopah, to
be held by four other men.
The procession will begin at
about 2 p.m., and will follow
a route from Linwood to Davi-
son to Livernois to Outer Dr.
(Vassar Dr.) to James Couzens
to Southfield. A sound truck
will play Hebrew liturgical
music.
When the parade reaches
the new building at South-
field and Mt. Vernon (91/2
Mile Rd.) , the two Torahs
already at the new syna-
gogue will be brought out to
greet the arrival of the new
ones, and there will follow
the customary ceremony of
placing the Scrolls back in
the ark.
A band will be on hand
when the procession arrives at
the suburban synagogue, all of
which is based on the principle
of paying tribute to royalty.
Cantor Adler will be joined
here by the synagogue choir
and choral group, and Morris
Brandwine, vice-president, will
extend greetings on behalf of
president Harry C. Friedberg,
who is recovering from illness
in Florida.
Rabbi Donin, in explaining
the significance of the parade
and the other ceremonies sur-
rounding the transfer of • the
Scrolls, indicated that it is
a custom that probably had its
origin in the European ghettos.
He added that the Torah,
being the most important
single instrument of Jewish
life, is always compared to
royalty, and, as such, is com-
pared to the procession which
surrounds a visit by a King
and Queen of a foreign coun-
try, complete with guards of
honor, music and ceremony.
