Three leaders in the Jewish
community were honored re-
cently by the Michigan Chro-
nicle, Negro weekly newspaper,
among "eleven outstanding citi-
zens of Michigan selected as re-
cipients of the annual Chronicle
Brotherhood citations for 1957."
The trio includes Leonard N.
Simons, advertising executive;
Dr Morton J. Sobel, director
of the Michigan Region of
Bnai Brith's Anti-Defamation
League; and Judge Victor J.
Baum, Judge of Circuit Court.
Simons, who with Judge
Wade McCree, Jr., was chair-
man of the United Negro Col-
.. lege Fund, was cited for ."his
drive and aggressiveness" which
permitted the fund to go beyond
its goal and raise more money
than had even been raised in
Michigan before.
In the citation to Dr. Sobel,
the Chronicle called attention
to his abilities as a scholar,
lecturer and resourceful person
and his contributions to the
overall community welfare.
Stating that Judge Baum haS
"earned the respect and admira-
tion of the entire community
for his handling of matters be-
fore his Court," the citation
specifically referred to two
cases over which he presided:
the Cherrylawn Housing Case
involving Mrs. Ethel Watkins
and the case of the FEPC vs.
the Detroit Water Board.
