Safeguards assuring proper
burial for known, deceased
Jews whose remains are un-
claimed by relatives or friends
have been written into Senate
Bill No. 1277 creating an
anatomy committee within the
State Department of Health.
The bill, which passed the
State Senate and is now up for
a vote in the House of 'Repre-
sentatives, would turn all un-
claimed bodies over to educa-
tional institutions requiring
them for medical instruction.
At the request of the Hebrew
Benevolent Society and the
Council of Orthodox Rabbis,
and through the efforts of Sen.
Charles H. Blondy, two specific
changes were recommended to
the original bill.
One amendment specifies
that the religion of the de-
ceased be made known to the
committee, whenever that in-
formation is available. This
would be added to other
statistics such as name, age, sex
and cause of death.
The second provision states
that if the deceased was a

member of a religious faith
maintaining a benevolent as-
sociation, the association will be
notified of the death and the
body surrendered upon request.
Rabbi Israel I. Rockove, ex-
ecutive director of the Hebrew
Benevolent Society, in a letter
to Sen. Blondy applauding the
Senate's action, said that the
bill, as amended, "preserves
the tenets of our religion and
the aims and services of our
institutions."
