Abraham Nusbaum Dies at 57; Was
Bar-Ilan Founder; JNF Forest
in Israel Planted in His Honor

Abraham . Nusbaum, of 4216
W. Outer Drive, one of the com-
munity's most distinguished or-
thodox and Mizrachi leaders,
died Monday morning at the age
of 57, after a long illness.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday morning at Congrega-
tion Beth Abraham.
The large sanctuary was
filled to overflowing. Officiat-
ing at the service were Rabbis
Israel I. Halpern and Joseph
Thumim and Cantors Shabtai
Ackerman and Leibele Wald-
man.. The latter, for many
years a close friend of the de-
ceised, came here from New
York to pay tribute to Mr.
Nusbaum's memory.
Born in Poland, the departed
leader came to Detroit in 1926
and established the New York
Linoleum and Carpet Co. on
Jos. Campau. The firm has since
grown to five stores in Detroit
and Lansing.
At the time of his death. Mr.
Nusbaum was president of Con-
gregation Beth Abraham. He
was an officer in the local and
national Mizrachi-Hapoel Ham-
izrachi Organization, was active
in the Jewish National Fund,
Young Israel, Pisgah Lodge of
Bnai Brith and served on the
boards of Chesed shel Emes,
the Yeshivot Beth Yehudah
and Chachmey Lubien and Con-
gregation Ahavas Achim.
A forest was planted in his
honor several years ago by.
the Jewish National Fund in
. Israel.
. One of the founders of the
Israel Bar-Ilan University, he
was chairman of the Detroit
Bar-Ilan Conimittee. He es-

rael, and was one of the most
generous contributors to it
and one of the most ardent
workers in its behalf.
Active in many communal af-
fairs, he was a former presi-
dent of the Yiddish Folks
Ferein.
Surviving him -.are his wife,
Laura; son, Irving; daughter,
Mrs. Joseph Fetter; two broth-
ers, Max and Solomon, and
three grandchildren.

Abraham Nusbaum was a dedicated member
of our community, a man who inspired all of us
to greater action, for Israel, for the Mizrachi
principles, for the cause of Bar-Ilan University.
As the chairman of the Detroit Bar-Ilan Commit-
tee and as chairman of the executive committee
of the Mizrachi movement, he has left indelible
marks upon our movement.
In mourning his loss, we extend our sincerest
sympathies to his wife and his entire family, all
of whom cooperated with him in aiding our great
causes.
May his memory continue to inspire us to
action in behalf of our great traditional_ causes.
Blessed be the memory of this righteous man.

Events in Respect
for Nusbaum's Death

As an expression of tribute
to Abe Nusbaum, president of
Beth Abraham Synagogue until
his death this week, all congre-
gational and affiliate activities
will be suspended during the
period of shiva.
The lecture sponsored by the
Men's Club and Sisterhood,
which was to have featured
Dr. Selig Adler of the Univer-
sity- of Buffalo on Tuesday,
was postponed until Tuesday,
April 8.
Other events that were can-
celled include youth activities,
the father and son breakfast
on Sunday, the Sisterhood oneg
shabbat and meetings of the
Galician Society and Free Loan
Association.
A membership get-together
planned for 8:30 p.m. Wednes-
day, in the social hall, will
take place as scheduled. Ben-
jamin Siegal, chairman of the
board and acting president,
will preside. Members and
their wives are invited.

Grove of Trees
Honors Memory
of Max Hayman

Honoring the memory of the
late Max Hayman, prominent
communal leader, a grove of
1,000 trees will be planted in
his name in the Chaim Weiz-
mann Forest at Rehovoth, Is-
rael.
The project was accomplished
through the efforts of Mr. Hay-
man's widow, her family and
close friends.
Mrs. Eva Hayman, a former
president and honorary life
member of the hoard of the
Jewish National Fund Ladies
Auxiliary, stated that the plant-
ing of trees in her late hus-
band's name was in keeping
with his lifelong ideals as an
ardent Zionist.
Mrs. Hayman will leave im-
mediately after the Passover
holidays for an extended stay
in Israel, where she will visit
her _mother and her brother,
Meyer at Kibbutz Ramat Yo-
hanan. Her brother was one of
the builders of the kibbutz.

VIENNA (WJA)—a total of
345 Jewish children in Vienna
receive religious instruction,
according to a report of the
Vienna Jewish Community. Of
these, 173 are in elementary
schools, 53 in secondary and
