Detroiter, Back from 4-Month Tour, Reveals TravelsBehindIronCurtain Detroiter Marvin $lof re- turned home this week after spending four months abroad, in a tour which took him to Israel and Europe, including three countries behind the Iron Curtain. During 'his travels, the young Detroiter who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Slof, of 19791 Ardmore, spent three days in Prague, five days in Warsaw and six days in Moscow. He says that while anyone could probably travel behind the Iron Curtain, it takes a great deal of time to obtain a visa. Slof says he tried to get one in London, then in Paris and finally, after a five-week wait, during which he traveled to Israel, he was able to obtain one in Vienna through In-Tour- ist, the Russian Travel agency. The Jewish News: In your issue of March 7 you state that Rock Products Cor- poration, an enterprise started in Israel by a group of Detroit- ers, has been taken over by Solel Boneh, a Histadrut-owned subsidiary. As a participant in the organization and develop- ment of Rock Products Cor- poration, permit me to inform you of the facts of our affilia- tion with Even Vosid, a sub- sidiary of Solel Boneh, which are contrary to the above state- ment. Rock Products Corporation was organized in 1951 for the purpose of mining and crush- ing rock. After encountering many difficulties, it entered into a joint venture agreement with Even Vosid in 1954. This joint venture arrangement was brought about primarily by the efforts of Louis Berry and Dave Safran, with the active support of most of the stockholders, es- pecially Abe Kasle, past presi- dent of Rock Products Corpo- ration, * Joe Holtzman, Max Osnos, Morris Schaver, William Roth, Philip Lipson, Irwin Cohn, Israel Davidson, and others too numerous to men- tion. Even Vosid owns four small- er rock-crushing plants in the same area, and has been in ex- istence in Israel for about thir- ty odd years. The conditions of our affiliation are as follows: 1. The Detroit group retains 100% ownership of Rock Prod- ucts Corporation. 2. Even Vosid retains full ownership of their four plants. 3. All of the five plants—the plant of the Rock Products Corporation and the four Even Vosid plants, are run, as a joint venture, and all expenses and PASSOVER RESERVATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED AT -Colonial Hotel & Mineral Baths Mount Clemens, Michigan A Well-known Cantor and Rabbi to Conduct the Services—to Be Held on the Premises for the Entire Week MINERAL BATHS available to all. All net profits, if any, are divided equally between Even Vosid and Rock Products. 5. Rock Products Corporation has the same representation in management as Even Vosid. 6. Provision is made that in 1964 a merger of the interests of both parties is to be ar- ranged on the same basis, if the joint venture proves to be suc- cessful. It might be worthwhile noting that the joint venture arrange- ment has proven to be quite successful. From its inception it has shown a sizeable profit each year and we are now in the process of studying the pos- sibility of doubling our produc- tion. . The Detroit group, the full owners of Rock Products Corporation, have received yearly, since the inception of the joint venture arrangement, its share of the profits in U.S. dollars, as per agreement with Even Vosid and the Israeli gov- ernment. Our relationship with Even Vosid is very cordial and cooperative, . and we have had no difficulty whatsoever in running the joint venture. On the contrary, we are quite happy with our present arrange- ment. • A great deal of credit is due to William Roth, presi- dent of Rock Products Corpo- ration, and KaVenaki, head of the Even Vosid, for these pleas- ant relationships. The above mentioned facts in no way express disagreement with Pinhas Lavon's proposition that Histadrut concentrate its efforts on establishing pioneer plants instead of buying up factories from • private owners. On the contrary, as, if and when Lavon's - recommendations are implemented, it may serve as an additional impetus for the flow of private capital into the Israeli economy. Most econom- ists agree that the most con- structive factor in the process of the building of the State of Israel is the flow of private capital, accompanied by tech- nological know-how. LEON KAY. Upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be h o l i n e s s; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.—Ob. 1:17. Communist governments of Czechoslovakia, Poland a n d Russia, Slof said, indicating that the people in Poland seemed to have more freedom than in any of the other coun- tries. While in Poland it is neces- sary to have a Communist Party card in order to have gainful employment, in Russia, only five percent of the people are card holders. In Moscow, Slof says he met a student who explained that he was studying to be a doctor. The governMent pays for his schooling, his room and board, plus a living allowance of 80 rubels (about $20) a month. Most of the people, however, are not so fortunate. While their wages are roughly equiva- lent to $100 to $150 a month and their rent is only $8 to $10 a month, food is so high-priced it is almost a luxury. Slof said that fresh lemons cost 86 cents each, a chocolate bar is 75 cents (large size is $3), an egg costs 32 cents and butter is $6 a pound. Clothing is prohibitively priced, with suits selling for $200 to $400 and shoes $40. The Detroiter said that in all of Moscow, for its 5,000,- 000 population, there are only seven gas stations, and he could not find a telephone di- rectory. In Russia and her satellites, the government promotes the theory, and the people believe it, that it will take between 40 and 50 years to emerge from the socialistic-type o _ f so- ciety of today to a pure Com- munist government. For that reason, the people are willing to endure hardships to work for the better day. Of course, they know nothing about what is going on outside the Soviet orbit. In talking to his Russian guide, a party member, Slof asked if he ever saw American movies. The answer was that American movies are seen fre- quently. Just the week before he had seen "Sun Valley Seren- ade" and another film with Deanna Durbin. The propaganda, Slof says, is clear. The Russians lon't want to show modern Ameri- ca, but they feel that by show- ing movies of 20 years ago, the people won't see too much dif- ference between the levels of living standards. In Poland, a Jewish woman who survived the Warsaw Ghet- to, told Slof that if the gates of Poland were opened, almost the entire populace would stream out. As it is, she said, the 50,000 Jews left in Poland after the war have dwindled to 30,000 now, and most would like to leave for Israel.
