Friday, March 14, 1958—THE DETROIT JEW ISH NEWS-10 SYNAGOGUE Expert to Discuss Religion at Wayne SERVICES Dr. Erwin R. Goodenough, one of the world's great authorities on early Christian and Jewish religion, plans to describe his major work and its possible sig- nificance, Tuesday, 8:15 p.m., at Wayne State University. He will speak on "The Art of Greco-Roman Judaism" at 8 p.m. in 101 State Hall. His lec- ture is second in a series made possible by a grant from the Walter and Lea Field Founda- tion for Charitable Purposes. In the last few years Dr. Goodenough has been publish- ing a study, "Jewish Symbols in the Greco-Roman Period," of which volumes VII and VIII will appear in the spring. The study is based upon a body of hitherto largely unassembled and neglected archeological discoveries, chiefly synagogues and Jewish graves with their contents. These make such wide use of pagan images as to suggest that Jews of the day in actual practice were far from being "orthodox" in any Talmudic sense. Since the pagan symbols borrowed by Jews for the monuments are largely, the same as these used by early Christianity, the implications of such borrowing seem im- portant for the whole develop- ment of religion in the period. In his lecture here Dr. Good- enough plans to describe the material and discuss its pos- sible significance. Prof. Goodenough will be introduced here by Dr. Paul Rankin, president of the De- troit Council of Churches. YOUNG ISRAEL OF NORTHWEST DETROIT: Sabbath services at 6:20 p.m., today.
