Worldwide attention is being given to the able editing of Stanislaus Joyce's "My Broth- er's Keeper: James Joyce's Ear- ly Years," by former Detroiter Prof. Richard Ellmann, of Northwestern University. Dr. Ellmann, whose own book on Joyce is due off the press the end of this year, wrote the scholarly introduction to this volume; and his editing of the Stanislaus Joyce manuscript is credited with the significance that is wildly attached to "My Brother's Keeper" in literary circles throughout the world. A great deal of interest at- taches, in Dr. Ellman's editing and introduction, to an under- standing of Joyce's attitude to- wards the Catholic Church. It is possible that Ellmann's ap- proach to his subject has res- cued Stanislaus Joyce from Vat- ican disfavor. In any event, Joyce's name is not in danger now of rejection by his church. Prof. Ellmann certainly has dealt kindly with him. Dr. Ellmann is the son of Judge and Mrs. James I. Ell- mann, of 55 Connecticut, High- land Park.
