Rabbi Adler Deplores Intrusions into Private Homes During Shiva Period by Uninvited Fund-Raisers A practice that has recently become evident on the part of representatives of religious in- stitutions, who have entered homes of people who are sitting shiva, with the ultimate aim of making solicitations for their causes, has drawn a number of protests. He calls it an "obvious malpractice" by "uninvited" fund-raisers and states in his message: OUR "Within the Jewish commun- ity there are many agencies and causes which serve important purposes. They are dependent upon the voluntary contribu- tions. They utilize various ex- pedients to get the support they need. The orchestra's participation in the tenth anniversary cele- bration will begin on March 15, when, in the new 3,000-seat Frederic R. Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv, Carlo Guilini will lead the La Scala singers in a concert version of the Barber of Seville. The opera-concert will be performed until April , 15, when the Covent Garden Opera Company will sing the chorale of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Orchestra under the baton of Rafael Kubelik. In May — when the actual date of Israel's state- hood is celebrated—Izler Solo- mon will conduct the orchestra and Nathan Milstein, violinist, will be the soloist. The other American guest conductors, singers and soloists will appear during the month of June. pratices, I would add yet an- other. Despite the great and ever-present need of institu- tions for support by individual Jews, these institutions should honor and respect those per- iods in people's lives when they have a right to privacy and to freedom from intrusion, even by such agencies as are dedicated to the noblest of goals. A per- sonal tragedy is not to be re- garded. solely as an_ organiza- tion's opportunity. The sorrow and bereavement of a family that has suffered a painful loss should not be exploited as the period when an approach or ap- peal can most effectively be made. There are circumstances and times in the life of indiv- iduals when no institution has the right to intrude. Advantage may not properly be taken of the intense emotionalism which frequently prevails in a home that has been visited by sorrow. "The week of Shiva was estab- lished for the family and not as a device to aid organizations. It is a time for friends to visit and by their presence as an ex- pression of sympathy help light- en the burden of .grief that has fallen upon the mourners. It is not right for uninvited repre- sentatives of institutions to util- ize this sad occasion to solicit support, which evidently they feel might not be as easily gain- ed. under more normal circum- stances. If we are to have stand- ards and a decent regard for the feelings of people, all can- not be grist for our fund-raising mill. The sorrow which one feels as a mourner is sacred. It de- serves the reverence and under- standing of the community. It may not be diverted to an ex- traneous purpose and seized as a wonderful opportunity to elicit a contribution. Dignity, sympathy and respect for hu- man grief require that organiza- tion withhold from trespassing upon the rights and feelings of bereaved families." Quell Extremists' Jerusalem Riot JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Once again police reinforcements were called out in Jerusalem to halt a crowd of Neturei Karta demonstrations protesting the building of a swimming pool with facilities for mixed bath- ing in an area adjoining the section where the ultra-Ortho- dox Jews live. After an open air meeting in the religious quarter, at which psalms were sung and speakers attacked the government and Zionists, hundreds of Neturei Karta members marched into the main street of the southern portion of this city. They car- ried banners and picket signs denouncing the pool as an "abomination." As they approached the vicin- ity of the nearly completed pool, they were halted by a police barrier. Disregarding police in- structions to disperse, leaders attempted to cross the barrier and clashed with police. Fists flew, water hoses sprayed and finally the crowd broke under police pressure. Several police- men were reported injured and a score of the demonstrators were arrested. The Israel Supreme Court, meanwhile, upheld the right of the Tel Aviv city government to ban the sale of pork prod- ucts and the raising of hogs, in line with a recent national law giving local governments this authority. The law had been challenged by a Christian Arab butcher. I. Rokeach & Sons, Inc., an- nounces the appointment of DAVID' SALTZMAN as General Sales Manager of the Company.
