• Rabbinical Group.Asks Friday Night Closings ATLANTIC CITY, (JTA) — The Atlantic City Retail Mer- chants Association was urged by the Atlantic County Board of Rabbis to ask retailers to re- verse decisions to stay open on Friday evenings which "en- courages needless violation" of the Jewish Sabbath. In an open letter, the rabbis expressed regret that "a num- ber of firms" had decided to keep their stores open on Fri- day evenings. The letters noted that many communities had tried Friday night openings and then dropped the plan for lack of satisfactory trade. The rabbis said that Friday night openings also adversely affected attendance at sabbath eve synagogue services and asked whether it would be pos- sible "to try any other evening but Friday." "We are reluctant to voice our collective protest to what seems ordinarily a worthwhile decision to increase business and serve the community," the rabbis declared, adding that "we - feel the same as our neighbors would if the stores would act similarly on Sunday mornings." Institute, Dinner, Sabbath Sermons Mark Community Councirs 20th Anniversary The Jewish Community Coun- cil Will celebrate 20 years of service to the community at a special Institute and dinner Sunday, March 9. The Institute will be held from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at the Hayim Greenberg Center, 19161 Schaefer, and the dinner is scheduled for,6 p.m. at Rainbow Terrace. The community is in- vited to participate. Reserva- tions may be ma-de by calling the Council office, WO 2-6710. The 20th anniversary dinner will feature a review of some of the problems which the changing_ world situation and the changing American Jewish community have occasioned. Since the number of places at the Rainbow Terrace is limited, reservations must be made early. A special Jewish Commit- nity Council Sabbath has been designated on March 1 in celebration of ' the Jewish Community Council's 20th anniversary. Many Detroit rabbis are mem- bers of the various standing committees of the Council, as well as of the Delegate Assem- bly. Their sermon this Sabbath will evaluate council activities. Samuel J. Rhodes, Council president, and Dr. Samuel Krohn, chairman of the inter- national relations committee, state that material about the Council may be obtained at the Council office, 163 Madison.
