`Israel Cohen Hoax'

Emanu-El Institute Lauded
Editor, The Jewish News:
Congratulations to Temple
Emanu-El for its first Institute
on Judaism! It is not very often
that one takes the time to ex-
press his appreciation for a
meticulously planned and pur-
poseful program.
This Institute presented a
first hand opportunity to our
non-Jewish colleagues to visit
a house of worship, and to hear
three rabbis explain the holi-
days, philosophical insight, and
customs of our people.
IDA G. ENKEL
On several occasions in the
past three or • four years, The
Jewish News' Washington JTA
correspondent has exposed at-
tempts by , anti-Semites to por-
tray a mythical "Israel Cohen,"
who was depicted as "an
English Communist," as seek-
ing to undermine American
unity through a "Racial Pro-
gram."
In Sunday's Detroit'News, it
is finally indicated that this
vile propaganda is a "hoax"
that was perpetrated under the
name "Israel Cohen."
Meanwhile, the name of the
pioneer Zionist and co-worker
of Theodor Herzl, Israel Cohen
of London, now 81, has been
dragged into this outrageous
bigotry campaign.
Writing from London, Cohen
has expressed amazement at
the use of a name like his. He
showed how he ..not only never
was a Communist but has op-
posed Communism.
Friedman long ago pointed
to the fantastic use of a typic-
ally Jewish name in order to
spread anti-Semitism. At this
late hour, the hoax is exposed.
Has the damage already been
done?
