A number of survivors testi- fied that on July 7, 1941, Ger- S.S. units pillaged and burned one of Romania's greatest Jewish communities, Czerno- witz. The widow of Chief Rabbi Marks recalled . how her hus- band and other Jewish com- munity leaders were held prisoner by the German police and how they; together with another 160 victims, were shot.
