When Bereavement Comes
Jewish organizations here,
and movements interested in
inter-racial amity, are mourning
the recent death here of Sam-
uel Lieberman, one of Detroit's
most colorful personalities.
Known popularly as "Shaye"
Lieberman, the deceased was
one of the most dynamic ad-
vocates of just causes. He was
a forceful Yiddish orator and
his voice was often heard in
defense of Jewish rights.
One of the organizers of the
Jewish Community Council, his
views on many issues often
swayed large audiences.
He was best known in re-
cent years as the organizer
of the East Side Merchants
Organization and as the
cementer of good feelings be-
tween Jews and Negroes. He
was a vice-president of the
National Association for the
Advancement of the Colored
People, and the NAACP sev-
eral years ago sent him as a
delegate to the NAACP con-
vention in San Francisco, and
he represented NAACP at
conferences in Washington.
Active in relief movements,
on a national scale, he always
responded promptly to every
call to duty on the local front.
Born in Russia, Lieberman
came to the United States in
1907. He was the sixth member
of a far–ily of 15 children. His
brother, Chaim Lieberman, is
one of the most popular writers
on the Jewish Daily Forward
and is known as the major
critic of the late Sholem Asch's
attitude on Christianity.
He lived in New York for a
brief period before coming to
Detroit. His late residence here
was at 16134 Washburn.
Surviving him are his wife,
Ida; three sons, William, Ar-
thur Schultz and Paul Schultz;
a daughter, Mrs. Nat Benton;
two brothers, three sisters and
12 grandchildren. He lost a son
in World War II.
