Robert St. John, foreign con
respondent, author and lecturer,
will be in Detroit on March 2
to speak at a community-wide
program sponsored by the
Young Marrieds Group of
Temple Israel.
Speaking at the temple on
the subject, "Spotlight on Israel
and the Middle East," St. John
will bring with him his obser-
vations of the past several years
during which he alternated vis-
iting in Israel and the Arab
lands.
A world traveler since 1939
when he first arrived in Europe
to cover World War II as a
correspondent, first for the
Associated Press and later for
the National
Broadcasting' Corn-
,
pany, St. John estimates he has
completed over 1,500,000 miles
of travel.
In the last 15 years, he also
has written eight books, includ-
ing the best-seller "Shalom
Means Peace," written in 1948
about the new state of Israel.
The book has been described
as the best written by a non-Jew
on Israel, and has been pub-
lished in Hebrew translation in
Tel Aviv.
Among his other works are
"Tongue of the Prophets," an
account of Eliezer Ben Yehuda's
struggle to revive ancient He-
brew. "into a language for
ordering groceries and making
love," and his latest book, "For-
eign Correspondent," in which
he sums up his adventurous life
in Southeastern Europe.

In his talk, St. John will em-
phasize that there is a possibil-
ity for achieving peace in the
Middle East. On his last trek
to that area, he noted that
"Jews and Arabs can live side
by side in • peace, as long as
no one is stirring them up
against each other."
He told of the boarder town
of Battir, 15 miles west of Jeru-
salem, where the Jerusalem-Tel
Aviv railroad line splits the
village between Israel and Jor-
dan, where Arab and Israeli
children go to the same school
