Mrs. Izner Receives
'Volunteer' Award

A Detroiter for only a little
more than six years, Mrs. San-
ford Izner, of 5920 W. Outer
Dr., was this week chosen by
the United Community Services
as its "Volunteer of the Week."
Coming here from Chicago,
Ill., Mrs. Izner soon became
active in the clothing drive and
resale shops . of the Detroit Sec-
tion, National Council of Jew-
ish Women.
She followed this up with
other work- for Council, and
became, at various times, a vice-
president, chairman and co-
chairman a the finance com-
mittee and treasurer.
The mother of two daughters,
Mrs. Izner is now most inter-
ested in Council's newest proj-
ect, the Activities Center for
Older Adults, which meets each
Wednesday afternoon, at the
Council office, 8432 W. Mc-
Nichols.
For her service work, Mrs.
Izner will receive the Com-
munity Service Pin and a cita-
tion from the Central Volun-
teer Bureau of the UCS.

brown pie crust and delicious
cherry filling. Here is the re-
cipe that helped her win her
crown:

2 1A tablespoons cornstarch
% cup cherry juice
cup sugar
1 tablespoon butter
pinch of salt
4 drops almond extract
3 cups cherries (frozen,
thawed, drained)
Measure cornstarch into sauce-
pan; stir in cherry juice slowly to
make a smooth mixture. Cook over
high heat, stirring constantly until
thick and smooth. Remove from
heat. Add sugar, butter, salt, and
extract. Cool sauce while _making
crust. Fold sauce into cherries with
rubber scraper when ready to put
filling into pie. Pour into 9-inch
pastry-lined pie plate. Arrange pas-
try strips, lattice fashion, over fill-
ing. Use 7 strips each way and cut
off strips and pinch together firm-
ly. Flute edge of pie. Bake at
400°F for 15 minutes; reduce tern-
perature of oven to 375°F and con-
tinue baking until crust is well
browned, about 40 minutes.

27th Anniversary Event

Mogilever Progressive Aid So-
ciety will celebrate its 27th
anniversary with a banquet on
Feb. 23, in the new Sholem
Aleichem Institute, Greenfield,
north of 7 Mile Rd.
Officers to be installed at the
banquet include Abraham Gins-
berg, president; Charles Rubin,
vice-president; Sam Wohl and
Morris Arotzky, secretaries; and
Mrs. L. Feinberg and George
Leelchook, hospitalers.
The society, throughout the
