Brooklyn Lad, .14, Wins
Chess Title of U.S.

NEW YORK (JTA) - Four-
teen-year-old Robert Fischer of
Brooklyn became the United
States chess champion, winning
the title in a tournament in
which 13 American chess mas-
ters participated.
T h e competition included
Samuel Reshevsky, the one-time
boy wonder who came from
Poland nearly 40 years ago to
dazzle the American chess
world with a skill that baffled
some of the greatest players of
the time.
Young Fischer, already rated
the chess prodigy of this gen-
eration, plans to bid for the
world title at the September
tournament in Yugoslavia if
funds can be raised. He was
unable to take part in a tour-
nament last summer in Russia
for lack of expense money.

Anti-Jewish Passage
in Church-Approved

-LONDON - (WJA) - The
clearly anti-Jewish slant in the
description of the death of
Jesus, which forms a chapter in
an Italian-language Gospel for
children, has caused consider-
able concern in Jewish circles
in Italy, the World Jewish Con-
gress Information Department
learns.
In a - chapter headed "The
Painful Road" is the following
phrase:
"Everyone feels a vast sad-
ness. The Jews go to their huts
during meals. Some of them are
being punished. They strike
their breasts crying: 'Whatever
have I done'. Others do not cry;
they snigger. Their depraved
laughter, passed on from gener-
ation to generation, has reached
us. We all recognize these trai-
tors who, with their dark deeds,
kill Christ a little every day."
The volume, entitled "I am
the Life - a Gospel for Chil-
dren," was written by Amelia
Tondini Melgari and published
by La Sorgente in Milan. Its
ecclestiastic revision was ef-
fected by Canon Professor Eu-
genio Pilla. The volume carries
the 'imprimatur' of the Curia of
the Archbishop of Milan.
