Detroit author, Raya Dunay-
evskaya, whose book, "Marxism
and Freedom, From 1776 Until
Today," has been published by
Twayne - Bookman, New York,
will speak on "The Shorter
Working Day-- In Life and
Thought," under auspices of
News & Letters, at Downtown
YMCA, Feb. 23.
A UP dispatch quoted Miss
Dunayevskaya as predicting,
"Reuther will not fight for the
shorter work week but will
-settle for a few cents more and
some fringe benefits." Her pre-
diction was verified by Reuth-
er's substitution of his profit-
sharing plan for the shorter
work demand during the UAW's
recent Detroit convention.
Currently speaking on a
national lecture tour, Miss
Dunayevskaya is a former
secretary to Leon Trotsky.
She broke with him at the
outset of World War II in
opposition to his defense of
the Russion economic system.
"Marxism and Freedom," the
preface to which was written by
Herbert Marcuse, includes un '
published writings of Karl Marx
and Vladimir Litch Lenin —
Marx's "Private property and
Communism" and "Critique of
Hegelian Dialectic" and Lenin's
"Hegel's Science of _Logic.
Contending that there is a
conspiracy on both sides of the
Iron Curtain to link Marxism
with Communism, Miss Dunay-
evskaya insists that Marxism is
a theory of liberation that is
opposed to Communism.
The brutal exploitation of the
Russian workers is assailed in
this book and the author claims
that Marxism is rooted in man's
social struggles to be free from
economic degradation.
