Nearly 350 people flocked
to the Hayim Greenberg Cen-
ter on Thursday evening to
join in_ honoring Morris Lieber-
man, one of the Labor Zionist
Movement's strongest support-
ers in the Detroit area.
Active in the movement for
25 years, practically all of his
adult life, Lieberman has been
chairman of the Detroit. His-
tadrut Campaign for the last
seven years.
The dinner audience was ad-
dressed by Isaac Hamlin,
former national secretary who
now serves as a Histadrut
liaison official in Israel.

College Students
to Vie for 6-Week
Trip to Israel

The National Women's Divi-
sion of the American Jewish
Congress has launched its sec-
ond annual essay competition
among American college stu-
dents to award four study-travel
scholarships to Israel.
According to Mrs. Louis Red-
stone, president of the Detroit
Chapter, college students of any
race or religion, between the
ages of 17 and 22, may compete.
The scholarships, known as
the David Petegorsky Awards,
were established last year as a
memorial to the late executive
director of Congress. Last year's
winner from the Detroit area
was Sidney Jackson.
The recipients of the 1958
awards will receive a six-week,
all-expense-paid trip to Israel
beginning early next July. The
winners will participate in a
summer workshop, which pro-
vides six college credits, con-
ducted by the School of Hebrew
culture and education of New.
York University.
During their trip, the Ameri-
can students will live and study
at the Louise Waterman Wise
Youth Center in Jerusalem, the
youth hostel in Israel, which
was built and is maintained by
the American Jewish Congress'
Women's Division.
Winners of the awards will
be selected on the basis of a
2,000-word essay contest on
"Why I Want to Attend a
Summer Workshop in Israel."
The deadline is on March 16.

Hamlin, who brought greet-
ings to Lieberman from "the
government and people of IS-
rael," outlined the cultural
progress that has been made
during the last year in the
Jewish state.
He also spoke of a number
of tours that have been ar-
ranged by Histadrut in connec-
tion with the celebration of
Israel's 10th anniversary year,
and urged "as many of you as
possible to visit us during
1958."
The other principal speaker
was Dr. Dov Biegun, who
stressed the vital need for con-
tinuing support of Israel dur-
ing the period ahead.
Successor to Hamlin in the
National Committee for Labor
Israel, Dr. Biegun presented a
plaque to Lieberman as "a
token of our esteem and
devotion."
The plaque, called a Scroll
of Honor, was inscribed, "To
Morris Lieberman, in deep ap-
preciation of the leadership
and guidance he has given to
the Israel Histadrut Campaign
in Detroit for the past 25
years. For his tireless devotion
to the cause of Israel and His-
tadrut and his contribution to
the welfare of the Jewish
people."
Other messages of greeting
Were brought from Mrs. Irving
Posner, of Pioneer Women;
Harry Schumer, Farband; Wil-
liam Cohen, vice-president of
the Jewish Community Coun-
cil; Pinchas Cruso, national
chairman of the LZOA Central
Committee; Sandford Goldberg,
Philip Goldstein and Norman
Cottler.
Sidney Shevitz, past presi-
dent of the Jewish Community
Council, was the evening's
chairman.
The dinner audience was en-
tertained by the performances
of Ben Basenko and Bina Lan-
dau, the guest artists.
Although no exact tally was
available on the status of the
Histadrut d r iv e, indications
were given that most divisions
are within sight of their goal.
Honors were extended to
Farband Branch 79 and to Hy-
man Max, Mrs. A. Sokolov,
Louis Goldsmith, M. Zarankin
and M. Zweig for their special
efforts in bringing the cam-
paign near to its completion.
