A nucleus of 40 Detroit
sportsmen has been organized
as the Detroit Committee for
Sports in Israel, under the
chairmanship of Herman Fish-
man, former University of
Michigan athlete.
Meeting last week, the sports
enthusiasts heard Col. Harry
D. Henshel, national chairman
of the U.S. Olympic basketball
committee and president of the
U.S. Committee for Sports in
Israel, review the goals of the
latter organization.
Since 1948, Col. Henshel
said, the committee has sent
a sizeable number of recognized,
American athletes and coaches
to Israel • to conduct sports
clinics throughout . the land.
He also said that the com-
mittee was responsible for
bringing Israeli physical train-
ing.- instructors to this country
to receive instruction in U.S.
schools and colleges.
As part of the program, Col.
Henshel continued, a tremen-

dous quantity of sports equip-
ment, books and training films
have gone to Israel. The com-
mittee also sends athletes and
coaches to the Maccabiah
Games, held every fair years
in Israel.
The specific Detroit project,
according to Fishman, will be.
the introduction of baseball
to the Jewish state. The group
expects to supply equipment,
instructors, films and other
aids to popularize the game
there.
The group will meet the
first Thursday of each month
at Yeaman's, when various per-
sonalities from the sports
world will • be featured. All
interested people are invited
to the luncheons.
Aiding Fishman in the for-
mation of the local group are
Bob Morrison, Charles Abram-
son, Dr. Henry Berris, Ted
Curtis, Mitchel 1' Feldman
Aaron Katz, Hy Keidan, Byron
Krieger, Joe Lerner, George
Parzen and Arnold Rosman.
