Judge NATHAN J. KAUFMAN looks at a letter delivered
to him personally by members of Oak-Woods Lodge of Bnai
Brith informing him that he was chosen to be the recipient
of the lodge's annual Brotherhood Award. -Pictured with
Judge Kaufman, are left to. right, JAMES LAKER, Brother-
hood co-chairman; NORMAN ZAUSMER, chairman, and
JOSEPH BRQDER, Lodge vice-president representing Donald
Sills, president, who was unable to attend.

By the Oak-Woodser
Five years ago,- the suburb of
Oak Park was first coming into
its own as a community. The
houses, of course, came first, but
soon after people began to be
concerned about their houses of
worship.
At the time, Dr. Paul Dur-
ham, of Royal Oak's First Meth-
odist Church, learned that a
-growing Jewish congregation- in
the area was in need of a place
to worship on Rosh Hashanah.
So, he offered to Temple
Emanu-El, then served by Rabbi
Frank Rosenthal, the facilities
of his church for the New -Year
services.
It is said that bad news
travels fast; it may be said that
good news gets around in a.
hurry also. For it was in no
time at all that Oak-W o o d s
Lodge of Bnai Brith heard of
this friendly offer and decided
to give public recognition to a
good deed.
During Brotherhood Week,
five years ago, the Lodge
presented Dr. Durham with
a special award. The re-
sponse created so much good-
will among various segments
of the new community that
it was instituted as the Oak-
Woods Lodge annual Broth-
erhood Award.
This year, at the sixth annual
Brotherhood dinner, to be held
at 6:30 p.m., Feb. 18, at Temple
Emanu-El (which in the five
years past has completed its
beautiful building at 14450 W.
10 Mile), another award win-
ner will be cited.
He is Judge Nathan J. Kauf-,
man, of the Wayne County
Juvenile Court, the first person-
age outside of the South Oak-
land County area to be given
this honor.
According to Norman Zaus-,
mer, chairman of the Brother-
hood committee, and Jimmy La-
ker, co-chairman, Judge Kauf-
man's selection was based on
his helpful influence on young
