Gen. Laskov Succeeds Moshe Dayan JERUSALEM (JTA) • Maj. Gen. Moshe Dayan has resigned , as Israel Army Chief of Staff 1, and has been replaced by Brig. Gem Chaim Laskov, it was announced here at the conclusion of the weekly Cabi- net meeting. Unlike his predecessors, Gen. Da-an has asked to remain in the army and his request has been approved. There is no official indication of Gen. Dayan's future duties, but it is understood that he will take a long leave of absence to prepare himself for a new and important post. . Because of Israel govern- ment policy that only the Chief of Staff shall be a Major Gen- eral. on active status, Gen.. Dayan will revert to Brigadier rank. Gen. Laskov will be pro- moted to Major General. The question of a reversion in rank has never come up before in the 10-year history of the armed forces because each re- signing Chief of Staff has left the service. The elevation of 111aj. Gen. Laskov to the • post of Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Army set in motion a chain of changes in the entire Army high command. ' Gen. Laskov was succeeded as commander of the southern. front by Col. Chaim Vivian Herzog, who served for a time as Israeli military attache in Washington. Brig. Zvi Tsur, the commander of the central front; was promoted to Deputy Chief of Staff while the cur- rent deputy, Brig. Meir Ainit will take command of the cen- tral front. Russian born, Gen. Laskov came to this country as a young child. He received his baptism of fire as a youth in high school during the Arab riots . when he became asso- ciated with the Haganah. That association continued. through- out his life except for a five- year period when he served as an officer with British forces in Italy and Belgium during World War II. During the war of liberation Gen. Laskov served with . dis- tinction in a number of impor- tant campaigns, including the one which broke through from Central Palestine to the Negev, the assault on Latrun and the Galilee fighting. Brig. Moshe Dayan, who will remain on active status with the army, will take a long leave to re- sume his studies at the Hebrew University. Published by Brit Ivrit Olamit. A few days ago I was strol- ling in the streets of Jerusalem with a friend of mine who came on a visit to Israel. "Why are all the children wearing white clothes today?" my friend asked me. "Today is a great holiday for the children," I answered him, "Today is the fifteenth of Shevat, the New Year of the Trees. Abroad Jews have almost forgotten this ancient holiday, but here in Israel we have re- newed it. Tu B'Shevat is one of the most beautiful holidays for the children." Here, in the Land of Israel, the trees begin to bloom in the month of Shevat and therefore (we) celebrate the "New Year of the Trees" in the middle of the month. A beautiful custom connected with Tu B'Shevat in Israel is the planting of trees. On the day of the holiday the children go out of school together with their teachers, to (a place) outside of town, to • a place Where._there ar .norti.eles. irAis And -Aifonallapliiig *and he plants the sapling in the earth. Perhaps in another few years, when the child will have grown and the tree will have grown, the same children will find shade and rest beneath the trees which they themselves planted on Tu B'Shevat.
