The Vaad, organized 20 years ago to strengthen kashrut and further religious and cultural activities, has coordinated and standardized religious practices in the metropolitan area. A few years ago, under the direction of David J. Cohen, the Merkaz, a layman's body, was organized to coordinate synagogue activity in the com- munity.
