Convict Nazis in Italy

BY DAVID BEN-MORDECHAY BLIGH

Copyright by David Ben - Mordeebay Bligh, London, England

The idea of forming a complete Jewish platoon of Italian
Secret Police for detection of Nazis was conceived by a woman:
Dr. Lidya Torabin-Ofratti, chief pathologist of the• Criminal
Investigation Department of the Naples City Police—the sole
woman in the entire Italian Police Force.
In February 1946 Dr. Torabin-Ofratti presented her plan to
the Italian Ministry of Justice, but it was rejected due, to lack
of finance. She then approached several leading personalities—
in vain. Eventually she contacted Marchese Vittorio deCiguerra
head of the Detective Training Center in Turin, and in a single
interview secured his support.
He agreed to undertake. within the bounds of his center, the
training of a special unit for detection of Nazis—if Dr. Torabin-
- Ofratti managed to find the suitable recruits.
A year elapsed in persistent
search and appeals to various
institutions and Jewish groups.
It involved a vast correspon-
dence and considerable ex-
penses — all covered by Dr.
Torabin-Ofratti.
At last, on May 27, a complete
platoon of 42 Jewish cops, a
sergeant and one lieutenant,
received their Detective-Gradu
ate certificates and police cards.
Eagerly • they went to work
and at the end of 1949 their
record bore the names of 118
tried and sentenced Nazis and
their collaborators — among
them •Gauletier Enrico Villini-
Kruger. a ‘Volksdeutscher', re-
sponsible for the death of 4000
Italian Jews and many non-Jew-
ish Italians. He was arrested in
a villa near Milan where he
lived under the name of Markiz
Gio ta no Armandarez as a
Spaniard.
The years 1950 and 1951
brought little success,, mainly
Above: Dr. Lidya Torabin- due to the lack of financial
Ofratti. Below: Carabinieri facilities and the improved
marching to Naples syna- disguise of the remaining war-
gogue.
In 1952, however, a stroke of luck led one of the constantly
watchful constables onto the track of a suspicious-looking
Export-Import businessman from Argentine who had invested
considerable amounts of money in Italy and had settled there.
It took a whole year to collect sufficient evidence to justify
his arrest on Italian soil. Apart from conducting the whole
operation, with utmost care in order not to provoke the ever-
watchful German's suspicion. it was necessary to gather
convincing evidence concerning his false Argentinean citizen-
ship, in order to avoid possible conflicts in the Italo-
Argentinean relations, because there was no, doubt that the
Argentinean authorities would intervene in favor of their
"citizen".
The investigation and the suspect's arrest led to an ex.-Nazi's
booty. The valuables were estimated at 51,400,000. It was never
discovered who the original owners of these riches were,
because the accused was shot to death in his attempt to escape.
The booty was submitted to the Italian Tr ,., asury and the
platoon rewarded with considerable financial allowances for its
operations which have been extended to overseas duties, thus
granting it recognition as a Special Department of the Italian
C. I.D., and authorizing the Campagnia Ebraica to avail itself
of the services of the International Police Network.
Another achievement of the Special Platoon was the deten-
tion of ex-General Wilhelm von Eidenberg, former commander
of . Hitler's 3rd "Freiheit" Army, who lived in Rome as a
"re t ired- member of Austrian aristocracy".
Only once a week can the Campagnia Ebraica relax. While
alt the Force celebrates weekends on Saturday afternoons and
on Sundays, - -the Jewish Platoon celebrates them on Friday
afternoons and on Saturdays. The constables then change from
stern-faced civilians into smartly uniformed cops and many of
them march off to the Naples Synagogue for prayer.
The means and methods of the Platoon's procedures and
its sources of information are kept secret. But its efficiency.
is proved by its records which reached hitherto a total of -
some 900 war criminals convicted.

UNITED NATIONS, N. Y., (JTA)—Representatives of major world Jewish
organizations testified on anti-Jewish discrimination in a number of countries at
hearings now being held here by a subcommission of the United Nations Com-
mission on Human Rights, which is discussing a study on religious rights and
practices.
The Jewish representatives charge d that 20,000 Jewish orphans—survivors
of families annihilated by the Nazis—are being brought up as Christians. They
also referred to the suppression of Jewish culture in certain states, but without
naming the Soviet Union directly. They also charged that Jordan has dese-
crated Jewish shrines. They demanded that the United Nations take immediate
positive steps to eliminate such persecu tions.
Appearing before the UN body were Moses Moskowitz, representing the
Consultative Council of Jewish Organiz ations—a group composed of the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee, Alliance Israelite .'Universelle and the Anglo-Jewish Asso-
ciation—and Dr. Isaac Lewin, representative of the World A g u d as Israel
Organization. Representatives of other world Jewish organizations fighting for
human rights and against religious discrimination are also expected to appear
before the subcommittee.
Dr. Lewin, who voiced the complaint that Jewish orphans are being
brought up as Christians, requested the United Nations to look into this situ-
ation. He called upon the United,. Nations *o. recognize "freedom of children
to maintain the religion of their deceased parent;,."-
Dr. Lewin also reported in detail to the subcommission on the deseci'a-
dons in Jordan. These, he charged, are being practiced systematically at the
grave of Rachel, near Bethlehem.. "The entrance to the shrine," he stated, "has
been destroyed. On the walls, one can read blasphemies in the Arab and English
languages. Signs of the Nazi swastika are engraved. Around the - s hr in e, all
possible junk and dirt have been sprea d."
Moskowitz urged the
United Nations to con-
demn not only direct
anti-religious discrimina-
tions but those of an in-
direct type as well. He
insisted that. throughout

48-Page 'Israel Today Section in This Issue

In response to the unprecedented interest in the reports of their
recent tour of Israel and European countries, by • Philip and Anna
Slo,movitz, published in The Detroit Jewish News and The Detroit
Free Press, and because of the numerous requests for a ddition al
copies of these articles that have come from our readers and from a
number of other communities and national organizations, The Jew-
ish News republishes them in a special 48-page supplement, "Israel
Today," in this issue.
This issue is therefore published in two sections, this Section A,
and the special supplement, published as Section B.
This supplement appears between pages 16 and 17. To fold it,
remove the section between these pages, then fold and trim along
the top edge to make it into a neat 48-page book.
