The portrait of Mr. Zwerd- ling was painted by Mrs. -Louise Reischer, internationally fa- mous artist who now makes her home in Ann Arbor. Mr. Zwerdling, born in Aus- tria, came to Ann Arbor in 1903 after being in this country foi two years. He was here only four years when he went to Manchester, England and there married Hannah Kauf- man, of Manchester, on Dec. 25, 1907. The couple returned to Ann Arbor in 1908 and have been residents of that community since then. Mr. Zwerdling, a successful businessman who retired in 1943, has been president of the Beth Israel Community Center since its inception in 1913. He also is honorary president of the U. of M. Hillel Foundation. He is a life member of both the Masons and the Kiwanis Club, is on the board of the Ann Arbor Federal Savings- and Loan and the YM-YWCA, is Jewish co:chairman of the Ann Arbor Round Table of Christians and Jews and dur- ing the entire duration of World War II served as presi- dent of the Ann Arbor USO. Mrs. Zwerdling, in addition to working with her husband on many projects, is active in the Beth Israel Sisterhood and Hadassah. In addition to Abe and Mor- ris, the couple has another son Joseph, of Washington, D.C. All three sons graduated as .at- torneYs from the University of Michigan. On Dec. 25, Mr. and Mrs. Zwerdling were honored at a family dinner party given by their sons at the Abe Zwerd- ling residence, 17265 Birchcrest. Among the 33 guests present were Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Miller, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mrs. Ida Chasman, of New York City.
