Tribute to Late Sen.' Couzens
In New Volume by Richards-Norton
"Biography of a Foundation"
by William C. Richards and
William J. Norton, ("the story
of the Children's Fund in Michi-
gan, 1929-1954, a Terminal Phil-
anthropic Foundation created by
the late U. S. Senator from
Michigan James Couzens"), pub-
lished by the Children's Fund of
Michigan, is a great tribute to
the humanitarian efforts of the
late Senator.
While the chief objective of
the book is to present a history
of the Children's Fund, its orig-
inal objectives and its attain-
ments, this interesting volume
serves as a deserving tribute to
the man who established the
Foundation and assisted in the
great efforts to solve many prob-
lems of mentally ill and other-
wise dependent children with
his gifts of $11,880,700.
Couzens had made his mil-
lions in partnership with Henry
Ford. Many years later, as the
Senator from Michigan, "he
-

,,:";*:,t':
fought the sale of Muscle Shoals
nitrate and power development
to Henry Ford and saved it for
TVA." This is one of the many
acts that distinguished James
Couzens as a liberal and as a
man of vision. The Richards-
Norton volume also points out:
"He criticized Herbert Hoover
bitterly for 'indecision' in mov-
ing against depression problems,
and to Franklin Roosevelt he
wrote: 'One thing wrong with
your administration is that you
haven't anyone in it who ever
earned a dollar'."
The value of "Biography of a
Foundation" is, of course, its
evaluation of the Children's
Fund. It tells the story of a
contribution towards the solving
of problems affecting unfortu-
nate children that remains un-
matched and unequaled any-
where.
A place of honor is given
in this volume to the late Dr.
Hugo Freund, who was named
- .03ezitsofkMatifigNsiattiraiaMigaiteg
;I§
president of the Children's
fund of Michigan.
"Biography of a Foundation"
should serve as a guide for men
of wealth who can accomplish
much good, and for those who
are exploring the problems it
deals with as an inspiration for
continued service in the field of
promoting the health, welfare
and happiness of children.
In an exceptionally beautiful way, our own
Detroiters, Jacob and Ida Nosanchuk, are celebrat-
ing their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Not with
costly banquets, but with -charity and gifts to insti-
tutions here and in Israel, they will make their
Simcha of 50 years of married happiness.
Mr. Jacob Nosanchuk is renowned in our com-
munity as a worker for every good cause. When
you come to a meeting, should it be for the Yeshiva
Beth Yehuda, for Jewish National Fund, Mizrachi
or any other good cause, you will always meet the
lively personality of Jacob Nosanchuk. He is in the
leadership of many institutions and organizations in
our community. He is president of Congregation
Bnai Jacob; vice-president of Mizrachi-Hapoel Ham-
izrachi; life-member and charter member of the
United Mizrachi Movement; director of Yeshiva
Beth Yehuda Hebrew Benevolent Society; member
of the Home for the Aged, Turover Aid Society,
Yeshivath Chachmey Lublin, and many, many other
institutions in the United States and in Medinat
Yisrael.
To mark their joy on the occasion of their
Golden Wedding, they donated a substantial amount
for a room in the BAR-ILAN UNIVERSITY in
Israel, which will bear the name of Jacob and Ida
Nosanchuk. They also planted a Grove of 1,000
Trees through the Jewish National Fund; they
established a Loan Fund in the Gemilath Chesed in
Jerusalem and gave charity to many other institu-
tions in honor of this occasion.
Mrs. Ida Nosanchuk, on her own, is active in
many Women's Organizations. She is a life-member
of the Women's Mizrachi; a member of the Ladies'
Auxiliary of the Old Folk's Home, Yeshivath Beth
Yehuda, House of Shelter, Senior Bicur Cholem,
Sabbath League, Rabbi Mandel Zager Bnai Brith
Chapter No. 1614. Detroit Chapter of Hadassah and
many other institutions here and in Israel. •
The blessings of many who will benefit from
their charity will be upon them on their anniversary
day.
In a Family Circle at the home of their daugh-
ter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Irving Raskin, on
Jan. 1, they will be together with their son, Dr.
Joseph Nosanchuk and his family, their daughter,
Mrs. Nathan Orden and her family, and their eight
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who
will honor them on this wonderful occasion.
In a private ceremony in the
executive offices, Mayor Louis
C. Miriani inscribed his name
on the document that proclaims
Jan. 12-18 as PRINTING WEEK
IN DETROIT, and officially
joined Detroit to the nation in
celebrating the birthday of Ben-
jamin Franklin as International
Printing Week.

Volunteers Raise $5,168
for Yeshivot in Israel
Three volunteer workers this
week turned over the sum of
$5,168 to the Vaad Hayeshivoth
as their semi-annual contribu-

The group, organized for this
purpose several years ago, in-
cludes Mr. and Mrs. Jacob
Baker, who, with their own con-
tribution, raised $3,165; and
Mrs. Sarah Goldman, who raised
$1,620. In addition, Baker
brought in $383 from synagogue
donations.
The Vaad Hayeshivoth is the
