Drop Religious Question
From '60 Federal Census

Zinkoff Joins
Pearson- Tour

WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The 1960 U.S. popu-
lation census will not inchide an inquiry on re-
ligion. This decision was announced by director
Robert W. Burgess of the Bureau of the Census,
U. S. Department of Commerce.
The primary reason for the decision, Dr.
Burgess said, was -recognition that at this time a
considerable number of citizens would be reluctant
to answer such a question in the census where a
reply is mandatory.
The decision of the Bureau of the Census was
greeted throughout the country by Jewish and other
groups concerned with basic liberties which had
opposed the plan as an invasion of individual Con-
stitutional Rights.
Dr. Burgess called attention to the fact that the
decision does not deal with the question of inclusion
of an inquiry on religion, or perhaps a modified
basis, in later censuses. Nor does the decision per-
tain to the publication of information based on an
inquiry on religion asked of a national sample of
individuals on a voluntary basis.
Many religious groups as well as social workers
and educators had asked that the question be in-
cluded. But, said Dr. Burgess, exception was taken
by the American Jewish Congress and the Church
of Christ Scientist (Christian Scientist), both of
which came out vigorously against the proposal.
Dr. Israel Goldstein, president of the American
Jewish Congress, who led in the fight against in-
cluding the religious question greeted the decision
as "a far-reaching victory for traditonal American
freedoms." He said the decision conformed to the
view that the proposal was "unconstitutional and
an unwarranted, invasion of the privacy of Ameri-
cans."
"The religious affiliations or beliefs of the people
are not a legitimate concern , of a democratic gov-
ernment committed to the principle of the separa-
tion of Church and State," he asserted.
Commenting on the announcement by Dr. Bur-
gess, Dr. Goldstein declared. that "it would be un-
wise for the Bureau to publish information based
on religion conducted early this year, according to
the bureau, on a voluntary basis."

NEW YORK (JTA) — Vice
President Richard M. Nixon was
presented herd with an honor-
ary degree of Doctor of Laws

award was made at a special
academic convocation at the
Waldorf Astoria followed by
the university's 29th annual
scholarship dinner at which
Nixon was the principal speak-

A highlight of the dinner
which benefitted the university's

was the presentation of the

trician and discoverer of the

In his address, Vice Presi-
dent Nixon said that Yeshiva

dition" of privately-supported
liberal arts and universities. He
noted that the university's pro-

body meant the development of

would lie fallow."
