The number of members of Jewish community centers in
this country continues to rise though indications point to the
A fact that women will soon form the majority in the centers .. .
Up till a year ago, males still predominated in center member-
ship with 53 percent of the total enrollment, but the ratio of
female to male members continues to increase . .. This upward
trend in the number of female members has been going on for
the last ten years . . . Only ten years ago the women constituted
only 40 percent of the total membership . . . The gain in mem-
bership recorded since then is attributed to the increase in female
membership • . It is estimated that almost four-fifths of the
1107,000 members who in recent years enrolled in the 350 Jewish
community centers, Young Men's and Young Women's Hebrew
Associations and Synagogue centers affiliated with the National
Jewish Welfare Board were female . . . A report now issued by
the NJWB shows that these 350 institutions had 565,000 members
last year, which is 11,000 more than the previous year . . . 35
percent of the total membership—more than a third—are chil-
dren under -14 . . . Teen-agers constitute about 13 percent of the
membership and their proportion declined last year . . . However,
the largest decline, evident for several years, was among mem-
bers of the 18-24 year-old group . . . Eight years ago they repre-
sented about 15 percent of the entire membership . . . By last
year they had plummetted to seven percent . • . The National
