Seek $200 Million
from Pipeline

NEW YORK, (JTA)—A plan
to build a pipeline from the
Dead Sea to the Mediterranean
Sea to transport up to 1,000,000
tons annually of potash and
chemically pure salt was out-
lined by Jacob R. Sensibar,
president of Construction Ag-
gregates Corporation.
Sensibar said that implemen-
tation of this operation "could
easily produce the $200,000,000
additional revenue" needed to
close the "gap in the economy
of Israel and make the country
economically self-sufficient."
The Chicagoan — whose firm
recently completed the draining
of 15,000 acres of swampland in
Israel's Huleh region, located
near the Syrian frontier :—told
more than 400 dinner guests
that "preliminary plans indicate
an annual revenue of between
$10,000,000 a n d $30,000,000"
from the production of potash
from the Dead Sea, at the rate
of 300,000 to over 1,000,000 tons
per year.
Joseph Meyerhoff, president
of the Palestine Economic Cor-
poration, told the dinner guests
that since its establishment 33
years ago, the PEC has "played
a singularly vital role in the
economic development of Is-
rael."
He disclosed that "PEC has
brought about the investment in
Israel's principal economic en-
deavors of some $50,000,000 in-
cluding the Corporation's own
investments."
Robert Szold, chairman of the
board, welcomed the guests and
called for a "greater flow of
private capital to Israel, to
hasten her economic independ-
ence."

Deny New Assurances
by Dulles to -Israel

WASHINGTON, (JTA) —
Newspaper reports alleging that
there • was an exchange of let-
ters recently between Secretary
of State John Foster Dulles and
Israel's Prime Minister David
Ben Gurion were denied by the
Israel Embassy.
A spokesman for the Em-
bassy declared that "in recent
weeks, there was no exchange
of letters between Ben-Gurion
and Dulles."
According to the newspaper
reports, Dulles had supposedly
"assured" Ben-Gurion that, in
the absence of a formal treaty
between the U.S. and Israel,
"substance and not form" would
be the essence of American
policy toward Israel.
Ben-Gurion is reported to
have sought an automatic guar-
antee from- this country for help
in case of an attack by an Arab
country. Dulles was reported,
in the exchange now denied by
Israel's Embassy here, to have
informed Ben-Gurion that there
was no immediate prospect for
an American-Israeli treaty.

Smith and Party Lose
Court Election Fight

SAN FRANCISCO, (JTA)—
Gerald L. K. Smith, the West's
foremost anti-Semite, and his
Christian Nationalist Party, lost
their fight in the State Supreme
Court to appear on the Cali-
fornia ballot.
The high court handed down
a decision upholding a judge-
ment of dismissal of a lawsuit
filed by . the party in Los
Angeles.
Smith, who was his party's
presidential candidate in 1956,
charged in his action that the
Election Code provisions for at-
taining a place on the ballot
were so stringent, as to be an
unconstitutional limitation on
the right of suffrage.
Under the code, the party
would be obligated to obtain
41,000 registrants or file a peti-
tion signed by 41,000 voters to
win a place on the 1958 ballot.
The Supreme Court ruled that
t h e code's restrictions were
reasonable.
