Hanukah Recipes

Hanukah Latke Parties espe-
cially for the children, have be-
come popular in this country.
So, get the grater out and ready
to make plenty of crisp, lusci-
ous Potato Latkes as per the
following recipe. Serve with an
accompanying sauce of fruits of
the season.

GRATED POTATO LATKES

6 potatoes (medium size)
1 anion, granted
2 eggs
cup sifted flour
teaspoon salt
Melted shortening or oil for
deep frying

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Shapiro, of

at a dinner party celebrating
theig golden wedding anniver-
sary this • Tuesday evening, at
the Mayfair Room, 19161 Schae-
fer.
The dinner is being given in
honor of their parents by the
families of the Shapiros' seven
children, Harry Shapiro, Mrs.
Charles Kief, Mrs. Mike Alpern,
of East Liverpool, 0., Ben Stan-
ton, Mrs. Wilfred Cole, Mrs.
Harold Weiss and Mrs. Ronald.
Stern. There are 11 grandchil-
dren.
Mr". and Mrs. Shapiro came to
Detroit from Romania where
they were married. Long-time
Members of Cong: Beth Moses,
both are active in a number of
community causes.._
Minnie Shapiro is now com-
pleting her 10th consecutive
year as president of the Jewish
Consumptives' Relief Society at
Denver, and she has - been treas-
urer of the, Beth Moses Ladies
Auxiliary for the last 12 years.
Out-of-town guests , include
Dr. and Mrs. Mike Alpern and
family of East Liverpool, O.; a
sister, Mrs. Mary Mellman, of
St. -Louis, Mo.; Miss Rose Hers-
cowitz, a cousin from Chicago;
and several cousins from CM-
cinnati.

Councilettes' ShoW
to Aid Children Abroad

The youngest members of the
Detroit Section, National Coun-
cil of Jewish Women, from De-
troit and suburbs, will sponsor
a fashion show at 2 p.m., Jan.
5, at Temple Israel to further
Council's Ship-a-Box program.
The of girls, aged 14 to 18, are
known as Councilettes.
Modeling for the show will
be done by the CounciletteS
and their mothers. Mel Ball .
and his five piece orchestra
will furnish the music. Refresh-
ments will be served and there
will be prizes. Tickets may be
purchased at the Council office,
8436 W. Nichols, from Coun-
cilettes, or at the door.
Councilettes hope to make
this show a family affair, and
urge all members and their
friends to include f at h e r s,
brothers, aunts, uncles and
cousins in the afternoon's fun.
Mrs. Oscar Schwartz is group
advisor for Councilettes. Mrs.
Irving Franzel is chairman of
the fashion show, and Mrs.
Leonard Weiner is consultant
and script. writer for the show.
Council's Ship-a-Box program
sponsors regular shipments of
toys, clothing, -and educational
material to nurseries in North
Africa and Israel.

Teens Plan Cage Tilt
Followed by Dance

The Teen Council of the Davi-
son Jewish Center is sponsoring
a basketball game and dance
to be held at 9 p.m., Saturday,
at the center.
Featured teams will be the
Lancers vs. Young •Israel.
Wrestling and tumbling matches
will be presented during half-
time.
Following the game, ,there
will be dancing to records and
entertainment by a guar t e t.
There will be nominal admis-
sion charge.

Pare, wash and grate potatoes
into a deep mixing bowl.
Squeeze the liquid from the
pulp then grate the onion into
the bowl and add eggs, flour
and salt, mixing thoroughly to
form a batter that will drop
from the mixing spoon. Heat
the shortening or oil in a heavy
frying pan over moderate heat.

dropping in spoonfuls of_ batter
and flattening slightly with the
bowl of spoon. Let fry until
crisp at the edges and under-
side before turning to brown
the other side. Be sure to use
sufficient shortening to cover
the pancakes if you want them
to be crispy. Remove pancakes
as soon as brown and drain on
paper towels. Serve hot with
cream cheese and sour cream,
applesauce, cranberry sauce,
dried fruits compote, apricot
puree or just plain.
If latkes in large quantity
must be made long in advance
of serving time, they may be
wrapped in aluminum foil and
re-heated in a 400° F oven for
10 to 15 minutes, opening the
wrapping for the last 5 minutes
of warming time for the escape
of steam and re-crisping. The
above basic recipe serves 6.

HANUKAH CUPCAKES

cup butter or vegetable short-
ening
1 cup sugar
3 eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
14 cup cream or evaporated milk
(or any fruit juice)
llz teaspoons vanilla
A pinch of salt if unsalted
butter is used

Cream shortening and sugar.
Add one egg at a time, cream-
ing or beating thoroughly after

each addition. Sift together dry
ingredients and stir into the
mixture alternately with the
liquid used. Grease small muf-
fin pans and place fluted color-
ed-paper 'linings (bought at any
food store) inside. Fill % full
and bake 15 to 20 minutes at
325° or till lightly browned and
sligthly peaked. Let cool be-
fore frosting and decorating.

FROSTING SUGGESTIONS
11/4 to 2 cups confectioner'S sugar

4 tablespoons butter (softened)
or vegetable shortening
1 tablespoon lemon juice,
approx.
A pinch of salt

Combine sugar and shorten-
ing by creaming with fork or
Wooden spoon, adding a few
drops at a time of lemon juice
till the mixture is of spreadable
consistency. Reserve 3 to 4 ta-
blespoons of frosting which may
be colored either red or blue
with vegetable coloring. • After
topping each cupcake with the
frosting, form Mogen Dovids on
each with the colored frosting.
Use a cake decorator or form a
piece of heavy white paper into
a funnel with a small opening
and squeeze the frosting in a
thin stream to decorate.
