The Suburban Community

Emanu-El Youth
to Conduct Services

Cong. Emanu-E1 will hold sab-
b-ath eve services at 8:15 p.m.,
today in its sanctuary at 14450
W. Ten Mile, Oak Park. The,
temple's youth group will offi-
ciate.
Those who will participate
are Carol Schwartz, Michael
Sachs, Joe Grand, Ellen Katz-
man, Mark Shaberman, Howard
Kutchai, Gloria Orloff, Bob
Sachs, Bruce Magidson and
Janet Birnkrant.

Are Suburban Communities
Becoming 'Gilded Ghettoes'?

By the Oak-Woodser

Is the movement of the Jew-
ish population to the suburbs
just another change in area
without actually being a step to
liquidate the ghetto society in
which the majority of the Jew-
ish community has lived now
for decades?
This is the big chunk of ques-
Dr. Morton Sobel to Speak tion bitten off. by Trude Weiss-
Rosmarin in a recent number
at Services in Pontiac
Dr. Morton J. Sobel, Michigan of Congress Weekly, under the
Regional director of the Anti- title of "The Gilded Ghetto."
The author cites a current

Temple Beth Jacob,• Pontiac, at pseudonym for Forest Hills, a

on the theme, "Your Bill of vey the Jewish population' is
shown to have increased from
Rights and Mine."

and today it is' estimated that
Jews in the community how
number in excess of the Gen-
tiles.

PLANNING A
HOLIDAY PARTY
FOR HOME or OFFICE!

Mrs. Weiss-Rosmarin goes on
to say that this "ghettoization
trend in Jewish suburbia" is
disturbing not only to Gentiles
and real estate brokers, but to
Jewish community relations
agencies, as well.
What causes this rapid Jewish
growth and the subsequent de-
cline is fairly well established
—the desire of Jews to reside in
areas where there are at least
some other Jews and the wish
of some Gentiles to move from
areas where Jews are moving
in.
What can be done to halt the
trend is a question that goes
unanswered. It's the same 'sort
of question that our own com-
munity fails to answer when
it moves from areas like
Twelfth Street, Linwood and
Dexter.

The author moves closer to
home when she quotes Boris
Joffe, executive director oi
the Jewish Community Coun-
cil of Metropolitan Detroit as
stating that one Detroit sub-
urb (and it can be only Oak
Park) has a Jewish population
of 60 percent of the total.

JACK'S

(Mr. Joffe says the figure is
quoted inaccurately, that it is
closer to 40 percent. Here, how-
ever, the story is a bit different.
The situation is of the buying
of new home's by Jews rather
than of Gentiles leaving the
area.)
There is, however, a trend
being established. When a Gen-
tile family does move out (us-

ually the reasons are not be-
cause of Jewish neighbors) the
home is almost certain • to be
sold to a Jewish family.
One feels certain, however,
that what is happening in
Crestwood Heights will not hap-
pen in Oak Park. There, while
the Jewish community is in
the majority, they seek, them-
selves, to act as the minority.
Mrs. Weiss-Rosmarin says
that the study shows that 'for
the sake of acceptance by Gen-
tiles, the Jews are prepared to
support the status quo on the
Board of Education, in t h e
Home and School Association
and the school system."
Regardless of any eventual
outcome, it certainly is n o t
worth sacrificing principles just
for the sake of acceptance. It
is time we learned—and it is
apparent that in Oak Park and
Huntington Woods we have —
that we can't duck issues by
playing ostrich and hiding our
faces in the sand.
We must seek ways of con-
vincing our Gentile neighbors
not to panic just because Jews
are moving into an area of de-
velopment, just as we eventually
will have ourselves to learn not
to panic when a Negro family
moves into our area.

A Latke Ball is planned by
the Sisterhood of Cong. Beth
Shalom at 9 p.m., Dec. 21, in the
synagogue, 14601 W. Lincoln, at
Tyler, in Oak Park.
Dick Stein and his orchestra,
will play music for dancing, and
there will be a sneak preview of
a forthcoming Sisterhood pro-
duction, "Around the World in
80 Dreighs."
Refreshments w i 11 include
latkes, cake and coffee, and
there will be prizes awarded,
according to Mrs. Joseph Cohen,
social chairman. For reserva-
