Friday, December 6, 1957—THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS-22
LONDON, (JTA)—A. L. East-
erman, political director of the
World Jewish Congress, denied
that the WJC had come to any
agreement with representatives
of the Jewish community of Po-
land on a series of demands put
forward by the Polish Jews as
the price of affiliation with the
Congress.

gress, expressed "surprise" at a
number of "assumptions" con-
tained in a statement of the
Cultural and Social Association
of Polish Jews, issued as a sum-
mation of negotiations between
Easterman and Prof. Arieh Tar-
takower of the WJC staff and
the Association.
He insisted that there was no
foundation for an interpretation
that the Congress representa-
tives had either accepted or ac-
quiesced in the demands of the
Association.
The WJC aide noted that dur-
ing the negotiations which took
place in May, it was made clear,
to the leadership of the Polish
Jewish group that "as affiliation
to the Congress was open to all
Jewish communities on terms of
complete equality, it was impos-
sible and undesirable to make
special arrangements with any
one community or attach spe-
cial conditions to its coopera,
tion with the Congress."
The "assumptions" on which
the Polish group would affili-
ate came to light at a meeting
of the central council of the
Cultural and Social Associa-
tion of Polish Jews, held in
Warsaw early in November.
Speaking for the Association,
its chairman, Hersh Smoliar,
voiced the request that the fol-

Easterman described the So-
viet's Middle Eastern policy as
disappointing and disquieting.
"Not the least of our anxieties,"
he said, "is that the restraints
upon the Jews of Russia may be
related to major international
policies of the Soviet Union so
fiercely concentrated in the Mid-
dle East."
The Jewish people as a whole,
he continued, are partisans of
neither the East nor the West
and cannot be involved in the
Big Power conflict, regardless
of the views of individual Jews.
The WJC leader paid tribute
to the Moroccan government for
standing four square behind its
obligation's to grant full free-
dom and equality to the Jews.
One freedom, however, it has
not respected, he noted, the
right of Jews to emigrate to
other countries, including Israel.
He -revealed that the Congress
was working on this problem.

3. The WJC "will oppose the

4. "The WJC will conduct the

7. The Congress will call on
all its sections to extend their
activities and "accept all the ex-
isting Jewish organizations
which wish to join it, and in
this way provide a basis for re-

Earlier Easterman reported
that the WJC was continuing
its efforts to send to the Soviet
Union a delegation headed by
its president Dr. Nahum Gold-
mann to discuss with 'Soviet au-
thorities various aspects and
problems of Jewish life in the
USSR.
