Bernstein to Direct Philharmonic

Danny Raskin's 30-Fear Tradition Ends with Ban
of Nativity from Chicago School

LISTENING

THIRTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD Leonard Bernstein is obviously
pleased over his appointment as new musical director of the
New York Philharmonic. Beside him is Dimitri Mitropoulos,
retiring director who recommended Bernstein. Mitropoulos,
will devote his full-time to the Metropolitan Opera. Bernstein
is the Philharmonic's first American-born conductor and the
second youngest to hold the post, which he will retain for
three years.
