`Stick to Arabic,' Landsmanshaft
Asked to Observe
Dorothy Told
Arthur Weyne, writing in the Israel's Birthda y

Atlantic City Jewish Record, has
the following to say about Doro-
thy Thompson, once a warm
friend of the Jews, but now a
guide and spokesman for the
Arabs:
"Miss Thompson recently
chided the American Govern-
ment for flaunting its largesse.
`When the rich continually ad-
vertise their wealth and benev-
olence,' Madame Thompson
sneered, 'they invite schnorrer,
a delightful and indispensable
Jewish word for a peculiarly
talented hijacker.'
"To those who know Yiddish,
the Madame's use of `schnorrer'
is, of course, awkward. Either
the plural is called for, or—
more appropriately—the parti-
ciple: schnorring (and why a
double r?). Noun or participle,
however, we think La Thompson
has her chutzpah! Let her stick
to Arabic.

Local lancismanshaften socie-
ties this week were urged to
follow the example of the Tur-
over Aid Society in participat-
ing in Israel's 10th anniversary
celebration by "making a
birthday gift to the state
through the Jewish National
Fund."
The appeal to landsmanshaf-
ten, signed by Turover presi-
den Nathan Corby and Max
Schulzinger, vice-president, calls
attention to a resolution adopted
at the landsmanshaft panel of
the JNF conference earlier this
month.
The resolution, adopted
unanimously, recommended that
all societies ask each member
to plant 10 trees in honor of
each year of Israel's indepen-
dence.
The Turover Society, which
has just planted a grove" of
1,000 trees in its name, al-
ready has pledged itself to plant
a second grove, 10 trees for
each member.
The statement concludes with
a request for speedy action in
completing the forest of 30,000
security trees which the socie-
ties earlier pledged to plant in
the name of the Detroit Lands-
manshaft Council.

Every man desires to live long
but no man would be old.
