A welcome to Abba Eban,
Bonds and Israel's 10th Anniversary
OtIr community will be privileged to
welcome here, on Nov. 30, one of the
most brilliant spokesmen for Israel, the
Jewish State's able Ambassador to the
United States, Abba Eban.
Ambassador Eban's record of service
to hiS country is studded with so- many
significant strokes of genius that it would
be most difficult to enumerate all of
them. He is one of the most effective
orators at the United Nations. He is a
master of languages. He has a fine sense
of humor. Above all, he is able to meet
all situations, no matter how critical,
with diplomatic brilliance.
His mere visit here is an occasion of
great importance in our community. He
is one of our most honored kinsmen, and
we welcome him as a personality and as -
the spokesman of the State of Israel.

Ambassador Eban's visit here has two
important purposes. The dinner he is
scheduled to address on Nov. 30 is in-
tended as an introd action, to the celebra-
tion of-the 10th anniversary of the State
of Israel by Detroit Jewry. It also is
aimed at inspiring greater interest in the
Israel Bond efforts. The two objectives
are inseparable. You can't sing hozannas
to Israel without assisting in Israel's de-
velopment. Therefore, all acclamations of
faith in Israel and asseverations of sup-
port for Israel must be accompanied by
concrete evidences of desires to be part-
ners in the scheme of helping Israel be-
come economically self-sustaining.
Therefore, the Abba Eban visit here
assumes far greater importance than
merely that of a personal visit by the
Israeli leader and a tribute to his per-
sonality by our community.

Great emphasis is being placed on the
approaching tenth anniversary of the
State of Israel. The event will be marked
by celebrations throughout the world.
National and local committees already
have been formed in this country.
As already indicated, such ' events
must be_ accompanied by concrete dem-
onstrations of support for Israel. The
United Jewish Appeal should be strength-
ened during the Hag Ha-A,sar. The Israel
Bond drives should be made effective
instruments in building Israel. The spe-
cific Zionist undertakings -sponsored by
the Jewish National Fund, Histadnit,
Hadassah, Mizrachi• and other movements
should be given increased support.
To assure a wholesome interest in
Israel by American, Jewry, it is urgent
that as many of our people as possible
should visit the Jewish State during the
Hag Ha-Asar. If seeing is believing, then
Israel is the place to see. If inspiration

The Book Fair: A Great Fest val
The successful annual Book Fairs,
sponsored by the Jewish Community Cen-
ter, in conjunction with many cooperating
organizations, have become genuine fes-
tivals for our community.
Attesting to the popularity of these
Fairs, which were introduced to our com-
munity as major functions for the observ-
ance of annual Jewish Book Month, many
thousands of our citizens, young and old,
take part in discussions of books, listen
to lectures on Jewish literary attainments
and have an opportunity to view the im-
pressive book exhibitions arranged by the
Book Fair committees.
The Book Fair becomes especially im-
portant in view of the opportunity it pro-
vides for the interested thousands of par-
ticipants to take stock of the literary
gems that are available to us, to review
our status as "The People of the Book,"
to inspire our community to support liter-
ary and cultural undertakings, and to
invite interest in and support of book
publishing.
What we need is a positive approach
to Jewish literary values, • and the op-
portunities provided by the exhibits at
the Book Fair and the discussions on
creative writing should serve as guides
towards the reading public's demands for
higher standards in books about Jews.
We have no doubt that the Book Fair
this year will once again be an outstand-
ing event and that the community will
respond to it as warmly as it has in the
past. It has become a genuine festival
for Detroit Jewry. Its sponsors have
earned our gratitude for having attained
a high mark in the advancement of our
best literary values through this great
communal effort. - •

'Adenauer and New Germany'
"Adenauet and the NeW Germany," by Edgar Alexander,
subtitled "A History and an Estimate" (published by Farrar,
Straus & Cudahy, 101 5th, N. Y. 3), is an impressive tribute to
the genius of West Germany's Chancellor.
In a preface to this interesting volume, Dr. Alvin Johnson
adds to the encomia for Dr. Konrad Adenauer by stating that
"the special object of Adenauer's statecraft" has been to bring
the disgraced and defeated German people "to its true German
nature, to its rightful place in Christian civilization, to its place
among the democratic nations in the new world order of peace,"
and he adds that "he is succeeding."
There is an epilogue to the volume by Dr. Adenauer himself
who writes that "the major responsibility for the rehabilitation
of Germany . . . has been borne . . . by the German government
coalition, in particular the Christian Democratic Union," and he
declares that "the Christian view of life is the sole guarantor of
law, order and self-restraint,"
But „this volume, with its excellent historic background of
-
German affairs that led up to Adenauer's leadership, fails to say
anything about the West German . Chancellor's negotiations with
Israel which led to the reparations agreement. This is an. error.:
It leaves a void in an otherwise splendid historic analysis and
charactet 'study.
