The Suburban Community
A Call During Book Month
to the 'People of the Book'
By the Oak-Woodser
It is interesting to note the
coincidental opening today of
Jewish Book Month with a
drive currently being conducted
by the City of Oak Park for
furnishings for the new city
library.
The campaign for nearly
$25,000 is being initiated by
the Friends of the Oak Park
Library to augment deficiencies
in the city budget, which would
prevent the library from work-
ing efficiently at its scheduled
opening on June 1, 1958.
There are many items that
will be needed to fully com-
plete the library, including
general furnishings, a reference
area, casual reading area, an
all-purpose room, children's
room, work room, the library
office, staff room, charging
desk area and a young people's
alcbve.
When the $200,000 bond
issue authorizing the library
was nassed in 1955, it was
felt the sum would be ade-
quate to cover construction;
however, in the face of rising
costs, funds that were to
have been used for furnish-
ings were applied toward
construction.
It is pointed out by the
Friends that this was done to
avoid cutting corners on a
building that would be in use
for many years. In the mean-
time, though, it meant that the
furnishings would be curtailed.
Rather than wait for a vote
on a tax increase to cover the
increased cost aa:_l because it
—is- a one-time fund drive, the
Friends organized a special
gifts committee to raise the
funds through a s c aled system
of contributing memberships,
ranging from $1 to $1,000.
Actually, the Friends is not
a fund-raising group, but an
organization interested in
supporting the library, pro-
moting broader understand-
ing of the library's facilities
and seeking wider use of the
library by more people.
However, during this period
prior to the library's comple-
tion, the Friends is seeking to
enroll each of Oak Park's 9,100

families in support of the cam-
paign for furnishings.
In the next few weeks, every
home in Oak Park will be
visited by volunteer workers to
enlist financial support- for the
library. It would behoove all
Oak Parkers, and, particularly
during Jewish Book Month, the
"People of the Book," to heed
the pleas for backing.
There is little question that
a completed building will bet-
ter serve the needs of all in
the community, children and
adults alike, when the library
opens its doors next June.
