Phillip Stollman and Abe
Nusbaum, leaders of the Miz-
rachi-Hapoel Hamizrachi and
the Detroit Committee for Bar-
Ilan University, announce that
the forthcoming annual ban-
quet will commemorate the
10th anniversary of the state of
Israel. This season's event will
take place on Jan. 7, at the
Latin Quarter.
A musical program is being
arranged.
A board of directors meeting
will be held in the offices of
the organization, 12238 Dexter
Blvd., on Thursday.
Further information is avail-
able at the organization office,

Jerusalem.. Three buildings are
planned, adjoining the Hebrew
University in Jerusalem. It is
to be a joint project of the
Jewish Theological Seminary,
the Rabbinical Assembly and
the United Synagogue of Amer-
ica.
The idea is for students for
the Conservative rabbinate to
spend a year in studies at the
Hebrew University. There will
be a residence hall for 100 sin-
gle students, with a wing to ac-
commodate 25 married couples.
These facilities will not be
limited to Americans: Israelis
also will be welcomed.

There will be a dining hall at
this Seminary Center, a library
and other facilities. The purpose
is to encourage studies in the
areas of Jewish thought and
philosophy.
It will take time for Reform
and Conservative thinking to
gain ground here. But, it is
certain to come—very soon.
Many Israelis already are es-
tablishing small min y a n i
where men and women sit to-
gether—as a reaction against
ultra-Orthodox domination. The
American liberalization influ-
ence may take hold sooner
than any one believes.

Rabbis, Sociologist Offer Different
Views on U.S. Religious Revival

NEW YORK (JTA) — Two •
leading Orthodox rabbis as-
serted this week that the re-
vival of religion in the United
States was a meaningful one.
Their view was opposed by
a rabbinically-ordained socio-
logist who called the revival
"essentially - superficial" and
founded on "such weak props
as social conformity and secu-
lar popularity."
Participants in the debate,
held at the opening session of
the Young Israel Institute for
Jewish Studies here, were
Rabbi S o l o m on Sharfman,
president of the Rabbinical
Council of America; Rabbi
Emanuel Rackman, past presi-
dent of the New York Board
of Rabbis and Yeshiva Uni-
versity faculty member, and
Dr. Bernard M. Lander, direc-
tor of the Yeshiva University
graduate school.
Rabbi Sharfman argued that
"the. farce of materialism" had
left man adrift and that as a
consequence "he is returning
to the true values of his tra-
ditionally ancestral faith." One
result, he said, was that "Or-
thodox Judaism is experienc-
ing a form of revival which
is most assuring for the future
development of a dynamic
Judaism."
Rabbi Rackman said tra-
ditional religion was "per-
meating the daily behavioral
patterns of an increasing num-
ber of adherents of all faiths"
and he cited in proof of Jewish
return the "growth of the all-
day school enrollment, • in-
crease in congregational mem-
bership, greater respect for the
sabbath and a host of other
things."

Dr. Lander replied that it
was "fashionable" for suburban
community residents "to join
a neighborhood synagogue or
community center for purposes
of communal identification.
These joiners have never com-
mitted themselves to the eter-
nal and all-engrossing verities
of a deeply-rooted religious
experience."
