Formation of Bnai Brith Council
Changes Pattern of Local Agency

Bnai Brith history in Detroit
has been markedly changed
since the formation of the first
G r eater Detroit Bnai Brith
Council in 1939. The council was
formed as , the coordinating
body of the then five local
Bnai Brith lodges.
The lodges which cooperated
to send delegates to the first
council meeting were Pisgah,
Louis Marshall, Theodor Herzl,
Detroit and East Side lodges.
The five groups felt that Bnai
Brith better could serve the
community while centralizing
administrative duties through
such a council. The council,
they decided however, would
not interfere with the auton-
omous activities of the partic-
ipating chapters.
It took about three years for
the council' to act with its
desired efficiency. In Nov.,
1942, it reorganized. The coun-
cil meeting on the 11th of the
month that year was attended
by enthusiastic delegates from
each Bnai Brith lodge. The cen-
tral body has met regularly
since that time. But now, 24
lodges and 25 women's chapters
partake in the meetings.
A leading lodge in Council
activities has been Pisgah
L o d g e, which existed 78
years before all other local
Bnai Brith groups. Seven Pis-

gah members have served as
president of the Council. They
were Louis Rosenzweig, from
1940-41; Harry Yudkoff, 1941-
42; Louis Schostak, 1943-44;
Milton M. Weinstein, 1946-47;
Isadore Starr, 1948-49; Victor
Bloomfield, 1950-51; and Al-
fred H. Bounin, 1953-54.
Other Council heads have
been Jesse F e i 1 e r, 1942-43;
David I. Rosin, 194445; Sidney
J. Karbel, 1947-48; , Lawrence I.
Yaffa, 1949-50; James N. Laker,
1951-52; Maxwell M. Lowe, 1952-
53; Melvin Weisz, 1954-55; Jack
Caminker, 1955-56; and Louis E.
Barden, 1956-57. Harry N. Katz
is the current president.
The Greater Detroit Council's
member lodges include Albert
Einstein, Detroit, Detroit Down-
town, Detroit Louis Brandeis,
Detroit Louis Marshall, Detroit
Surburban, Donald Fox, Dov
Fr e n k e I, East Side, Eddie
Jacobson, Harry B. Keidan,
Henry Morgenthau and Israel.
Other member lodges are Ivan
S. Bloch, Louis Stone, Motor
City, Oak Woods, Philip Hand-
ler, Pisgah, Rabbi Mandel M.
Zager,- R e x, Theodor Herzl,
Tikvah and Yuster-Rosenberg.
The Detroit Bnai Brith coun-
cil is one of the largest and
leading bodies of the District
Grand Lodge 6.
