McCall's Story Tells
of Mother's 14-Year
Search for Son
Henry Morgenthau jr.
and the 'Red Spies'
tion camp during . World 'War
II, is told in "The Mother Who
Lived a Miracle" in the current
issue of McCall's magazine.
In 1941, Mrs. Gotz and her
husband, Saul, were imprisoned
in a ghetto in Nazi-occupied
Lithuania. Late in 1942, while
Nazi guards patrolled the ghet-
to, Mrs. Gotz gave birth to a
baby boy. The baby was born
and hidden in a closet in the
room which the Gotzes shared
with eight other people.
When the ghetto was liqui-
dated • in 1942, Mrs. Gotz in
desperation handed her baby
over to a gentile woman. She
was then shipped out with thou-
sands of other Jews to the .gas
chambers and crematoriums of
t h e Stutthoff concentration
camp near Danzig. Miraculous-
ly, she escaped and lived.
The McCall's story recounts
the long, heart-breaking post-
war years in which Mrs. Gotz
tried to locate her missing baby.
Only this year, 14 years after
the two were separated, Mrs.
Gotz was reunited with her boy.

at this time of the year that
Henry Morgenthau Jr. was in
Israel. He sent a cable . to his
Dutchess County home, asking:
"What's happening to the Red
Spies?" The puzzled cable-
dispatch office sent the mess-
age. The reply was puzzling too:
"Picking thousands of Red
Spies. Not finished yet." .. .
Morgenthau finally explained to
the cable office that on his

grilled hamburgers? The shape
makes the difference!
GRILLED KEBOBS
2 pounds chopped beef (or half-
and-half beef and lamb)
1 grated anion
1 grated raw carrot
1 tablespoon lemon juice (or to-
mato . juice)
2 eggs, slightly beaten
4 tablespoons cracker or fine
bread crumbs
1 teaspoon curry powder or
paprika
Combine thoroughly and form
into elongated Kebobs around
skewers. Dust lightly with sea-
soned flour for that specially
browned outer crust and chill
in the refrigerator about 30
minutes or while you get the
charcoal started in the grill
pan. Cook over hot coals till
browned all over and serve hot.
These can be grilled under
gas or electric oven heat for
several treats. We like to use
the electric table broiler, too.
This amount serves eight.

no thermometer at hand, till
a little of the syrup dropped
into cold water forms a small
ball that holds its shape.
Heat eggwhites stiff but not
dry and add the syrup gradually
to the beaten eggwhites, con-
tinuing to beat with a rotary
beater till well blended. Add
flavoring and let cool while
you cream the butter in a
large bowl. Add the first mix-
ture a few tablespoons at a time
while continuing to beat after
each addition. This light and
creamy frosting is sufficient to
cover two 2-layer cakes, 9-inch
size, top and sides. Yields two
cups frosting.
VARIATIONS:
N o. 1— Coffee Topping is
made by adding -1 teapsoon in-
stant coffee and a pinch of
nutmeg. '
No. 2 — Mocha Flavor is
achieved by adding 2 squares of
unsweetened chocolate, melted
over hot water, and blended
with Coffee Topping, as above.
No. 3 — Cherry Frosting is
made by adding 1/4 cup finely
chopped or diced maraschino
cherries with 2 teaspoons cherry
liquid and beat till blended.
