Davison Ave. TO 8-0071 UNITED NATIONS, (JTA)- An extremely sharp protest against the economic boycott conducted by the Arab states against Israel was voiced here at the United Nations General Assembly's Economic Commit- tee during a major debate on a world-wide economic s u r v e y conducted by the UN Economic and Social Council. Addressing the Economic Committee, Israel delegate Dr. Fanny Ginor drew attention to the Arab boycott, emphasizing that the attitude of the Arab states "is obstructive to the in- ternational cooperation in eco- nomic matters which we all s• I've to attain." Dr. Ginor told the committee how, in recent years, the boy- cott techniques have been ex- panded to a point of pressure on companies in many countries if those firms are tied to Jew- ish ownership. Despite lal difficulties, how- ever, Dr. Ginor reported, Israel's economy has made tremendous progress. Meanwhile, in Jerusalem, the first official refusal by an Arab country to comply with an Arab boycott ruling against Israel was reported here. According to the press re- ports, a Lebanese spokesman disclosed that Lebanon had notified the Arab boycott office in Cairo that the 13eirut gov- ernment would no follow an order to boycott rAi France and- the British Imperial .Chemical Industries in retaliation for the refusal of the two firms to cease operations in Israel. The Lebanese spokesman pointed out that several other Arab states were not implement- ing boycott office decisions, leading observers here to note that the boycott office, which is a branch of the Arab League, is actually n instrument of Egyptian policy, as is the League. El Al Notes First Profits LONDON, (JTA) - For the first time since it began opera- tions, El Al, Israel's national airlines, announced that it was operating at a profit. A profit of 60,000 Israel pounds was chalked up in the last six months, the company said. This compares to a loss of over 1,000,000 pounds for the year before. Gross revenues were up by 2,400,000 pounds for the last six months while expenditures rose only 200,000 pounds. El Al planes carried 25,000 passengers in this period against 19,000 last year. Hungarian Slave LaborerReunited with Family Here LONDON - A 47 - year - old Hungarian dentist who hasn't seen his wife and son since 1942 when he was sent to a slave labor camp by the Nazis, was rejoined with his kin, now American citizens, this week in New York. According to officials of United Hias Service, the world- wide Jewish migration agency, whose London office is at 63 Mansell St., Mohacsi, who es- caped from Budapest on Nov. 29, 1956, arrived in London on Dec. 4th after he had been given the impression "by some- one" at a refugee camp at Eisenstaadt, Austria, that he would be able to proceed to the United States from England. Armed with photographs of his wife, his 16-year-old son, his two brothers and a sister, who managed to immigrate to the United States after World War II, Mohacsi applied for a non- quota visa because his wife and son are U.S. citizens. His wife, Ethel Morgenstern (Mohacsi is Hungarian for Mor- genstern) who lives with her son at 1904 Avenue 0, Brook- lyn, N.Y., was able to petition for her husband through the United Hias office in New York. .Ac c or ding to Miss Lieba Glicksman, United Hias Direc- tor in Great Britain, Mohacsi departed Oct. 9 aboard the SS New York for the U.S. The wan, greying Hungarian dentist, said a roundup of Jews in Budapest dispersed each of the members of his family in different camps and labor bat- talions. His wife and son were sent to a concentration camp while he was left in the eastern section of the Nazi battlefront. After the war he returned to Budapest and finding no mem- bers of his family, presumed them dead. A search for them proved fruitless. In 1952 he met a woman who told him she was looking for a "Victor Morgenstern" whose family was in the United States. Through this contact he located his relatives. He sought to get a permit so that he could join his kin in America but because of his professional status was refused permission to depart from Hungary. Health Group Sets Studies at Technion Three new laboratories de- voted exclusively to sanitary engineering research ha v e been established by the World Health Organization at Tech- nion, the Israel Institute of Technology, located in Haifa. Dr. Alberto NI. Wachs, WHO Adviser to the Technion, will direct the work of the labora- tories, which will be used for instruction of civil, agricultural and chemical engineering stu- dents, for sanitary engineering instrumentation and for re- search in sanitary biology and bacteriology. Extensive aid to these new laboratories has been furnished by the United States Opera- tions . Mission in Israel. Italy May Join in Mineral Survey JERUSALEM (JTA) - The possibilities are good that Ita- lian firms will participate in a projected .500,000 pound min- eralogical survey of the Negev, Ministry of Development offi- cials disclosed here. An Italian delegation has just completed a three-week tour of Israel, inspecting mines in the Negev and advising the Israelis on Italian mining tech- niques, particularly in the ex- ploitation of phosphates. Meanwhile, the head of an Italian chemical firm is now in Israel negotiating with tile officers of the Dead works for the uprchase by Italy of large quantities of phosphates and other minerals recovered It's an I for an I when two 'egotists -get • together.: - from the' Sea. $7—THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS—Friday, October 25, 1957 17-HOUSES FOR SALE
