"The Youth of a Nation are the Trustees of Posterity."—Disraeli By BEVERLY SCHWARTZ Central High School 'Liles bid a fond adieu to Birger Bakke who ended, this week, a long, but happy asso- ciation with both Central pub- lications, the Student and the Centralite. A teacher in the English Dept., and journalistic sponsor since 1948, Mr. Bakke has now been promoted to the position of counselor at Eastern High School. We of Central wish him the best of luck in his new venture. Many bewildered, astonished, and some very sad faces were seen in Central's halls and rooms Tuesday, as report cards were marked for the first time this year . . . For those sad- sacks, better luck next time! On the sports scene, Blazer thinclads finished as unde- feated East Side cross-country champions last week. Senior Norman Young concluded the season by finishing first in all four meets. He is the city's best cross-country runner. On the run again, Central will meet with the top three schools to compete for city titles. Blazers also won their first, long-awaited, gridiron victory over Northern, Friday, 14-7. A "cocktail" get-together, given by Partrite BBG at the home of Liela Chapnick, 19335 Pra'. ie, Tuesday, was held for all old and new members to become more acquainted with each other. In an effort to "get the word around" about Karnival Kapers, Nov. 9, buttons are now on sale for 10c each. A surprise party honoring the birthday of 'Lite John Marttila was given at the home of Myrna Miral, 23481 Sussex, Friday. Among those attending were: Sandy Baren, Mickey Sisskind, Diana Lawson, Terry Grosslight, Leslie Grosslight, Phyllis Wald, Michael Beltz- man, Sandy Stollman, Bobby Cohen, Sandy Zollman, Mar- shall Schugar, Carol Rochlin, Jack Kane and Sam Bernstein. Central's thought for the week: "Remember, even a fish wouldn't get into trouble if it would learn to keep its mouth shut." By GAIL BURKOW Mumford High School It's here at last! The Student Council will present the "Ivy Leap", a casual dance, on Nov. 1, in the school gym. The "Leap", Mumford's first social endeavor of the new semester, features M.C. Bob Terry, radio disc-jockey, spin- ning the records. Terry will present several L.P. record al- bums to some lucky students. DecorationS carry out the col- legiate theme, and students are to wear their favorite Ivy out- fits. * * * It'S Y ACAt'iDH FOOTBALL $8* See Your Travel Agent Sept. 1-Oct. 31 per person double occ. *50 rooms out o,f 258 T9 Nov. 1 — Aug. 31 Representatives from various Auxiliary groups of the Jew- ish War Veterans gather to discuss plans for their first joint membership "Guest-Together," to be held at 12:30 p.m., Tues- day, at Cong.
