NEW YORK (JTA) — One
hundred American Jewish com-
munal leaders from all sections
of the United States leave for
Israel and Europe this week on
the fourth annual overseas
Jewish Appeal Study Mission.
The mission will assess the
needs of Jewish refugees in
Europe and observe the manner
in which the people of Israel
are coping with the heavy
recent influx of homeless immi-
grants.
Three Detroit Allied Jew-
ish Campaign leaders will be
among the members of the
mission. They are Max M.
Fisher, AJC chairman; Charles
H. Gershenson, chairman of
special assignments; and Isi-

"The annual study mission
ranks as one of the most sig-
nificant events in the life sav-
ing UJA program," Morris W.
Berinstein, UJA pr e s i den t,
stated. "It is composed of out-
standing representatives of the
American Jewish community
who will have an on the spot
opportunity to observe the Jew-
ish refugee picture overseas and
to study the needs of the thous-
ands who are each month flock-
ing to the shores of Israel."
The 100 leaders will depart
for Paris in two sections from

(Translation of Hebrew

My son, Raphael, was very

Law!" He ran from one place
to another (from place to
place) and shouted: "Father,
where is my flag. Look (for
me) for my flag!" What has
happened? (It is) Simhat To-
rah tomorrow and Raphael
likes the holyday of Simhat
Torah (most) of all our holy-
days.
I can well understand Ra-
phael. You have no festival in
Israel upon which children re-
joice like Simhat Torah. Dur-
ing the whole year they must
behave quietly in the syna-
gogue, but on Simhat Torah
they can jump, dance and sing.
How beautiful this holiday
is in the synagogues of Jeru-
salem. The children pass in
rows around tthe Torah, in
their hands (they) hold flags
and upon them are lighted
candles. They dance and skip,
joyful and happy. The congre-
gation looks at them with love,
and throws to them sweets,
fruit, nuts and other good
things. The adults call out to
them: "Holy Sheep!" and the
children reply, "Meh!" imitat-
ing the sound (voices) of
sheep.
Once Raphael asked me:
"Why are the children so joy-
ful on Simhat Torah?" The
question surprised me a lit-
le, but straight away I an-
swered him: "On this day
(they) finish reading the To-
rah and begin to read it anew.

will conduct a comprehensive
study of immigrant absorption
and resettlement pr o b 1 e in s.
They will visit many areas of
the country on an intensive
tour of inspection, and meet
with leaders of the government
and officials of the Jewish
Agency.
They will hear addresses by
Premier David Ben-Gurion; Dr.
Nahum Goldmann, president of
the Jewish Agency; Levi Esh•
kol, Israel Finance Minister,
and others.
The mission will later report
its findings to the Jewish corn-
munities in the United States

UJA's efforts for the 1958 cam-
paign. This report will be pre-
sented at the forthcoming UJA
annual national conference in
New York, Dec. 14 and 15.
A report by the study mis-
sion last year was a prime fac-
tor in the establishment of
the special UJA Emergency
Rescue Fund which was cre-
ated to help save, transport and
resettle in Israel and other free
lands 100,000 homeless immi-
grants in flight from danger and
conflict in Eastein Europe,
Egypt and North Africa.
