the same street. The girls at-
tended kindergarten and grade
school together for nine years,
until the "disappearance" of the
Frank family in 1942.
Lies was reunited with Anne
in the notorious camp at Bergen
Belsen. During the winter of
1945, Lies learned that Anne
Frank was in the next com-
pound.
One evening, just a month
before Anne died, they were
reunited; separated from one
another by a barbed wire fence,
they exchanged whispered con-
versation, while Lies smuggled
bits of food and clothing to her
beloved friend. Then Lies fell
ill. When she recovered, she
was told that Anne had died of
typhus just two months before
the camp was liberated.
Lies herself was rescued, four
days before V-E Day, from a
prison train headed for the gas
chambers. Orphaned and alone,

she made her way to Israel in
1947. There, she was given a
home in a hostel maintained by
the Mizrachi Women's Organi-
zation of America.
